Anybody else in the public beta program?

I´m so happy I could burst! I dunno what it is about Live that inspires such feelings but, well, it does. I love it to little bits and pieces.

How is the new Freeze feature? I like the idea of frezzing/unfreezing at will, it really allows for even more complex work within Live, reducing CPU %.

Anyway, I'm not fortunate to be one of the 500 users to get into Beta testing, but please keep us posted about your experience with some of the new features.

Well, the freeze one is a good idea that´s currently drawing a fair amount of comments for not being quite there yet (but it´s only b1 still so...).

The new instruments are interesting, especially the arpegiator has a nicely exotic set of twists and turns that set it above the pack.

I´m not so sure about the beat repeater. At first I thought that it´d make IDM style stutters way too easy but after a while it looks like a bit of a specialised one trick pony that you might be better off replacing with some clever delay use. The jury is still out on that one, I´m not sure I agree with it´s pitch effect only going down either.

The suturator has a interesting added effect on a configurable mid-band which is quite nice and interesting and the new flanger and phaser modules come with envelope followers.

There is a whole host of organisational tools, for example you can save clips together with a whole chain of effects and instruments in one fell swoops; for example you could save a midi drum loop together with a instance of impulse and a reverb configuration. I like this idea but I haven´t yet come to grips with all of it´s side effects, partially because there´s no manual yet.

Aside from mp3 it turns out we now also have OGG suport and FLAC (which I don´t know). Many people are reporting great things about the new automatic marker placing and "beatmatching" but I had one fight with it where I was quite sure my file was 120BPM and not in any need of any extra markers, something Live only reluctandly accepted.

We now also have right-click menus.

Overall it looks like a "maintainances" update on paper but if you actually sit behind it it´s like it´s a whole new world to get to grips with.

I found and reported one issue where the way different instruments dealt with sync was inconsitend so far.

Interesting. Don't they request that beta testers not disclose anything about the products? Most software developers do because they don't want their software to get bad reviews or people to get unrealistic expectations.

No, Ableton has it all out in the open on a board called "public beta testing".
You can read it, if you want to. There are a lot of bugs now, some quite bad, in a few weeks all of those threads will be locked and marked "solved".
They are very proud of their relation to their customers and rightly so. The bugs, the sugestions and so on are all out in the open, as is the increadible speed with which they are adressed. They can afford to; they work on the weekends, they work in the middle of the night and they take every idea and problem very seriously. Actually some of them join the occasional "have a beer and post silly jokes" thread on the "general board".

I found what I thought was a inconsistency in the effects and within hours the programer of these effects had adressed it, anounced a future fix on one count and promised to look into another. If somebody else would disagree then he could in turn reply and sugest some other sollution.

It also means each bug needs to be reported only once and multiple testers can colaborate on pinpointing speciffic problems. We don´t get paid, we don´t get a discount and people are lining up to be involved.

I like it. What other program inspires people to post threads named "If this program had a [male genital organ] I would [perform fellatio on] it"? Somebody posted this on the Live board. They left that thread be, actually. They are crazy.

....And it´s on to 5.0b2 already.

This is what I mean;
http://www.ableton.com/forum/topic-21511.html

Almost 30 bugs fixed already, including the largest one so far. I think keeping this open is a great move because large lists of fixed bugs after just a few days looks very good....

This person points out an inherent problem with software instruments. They are sterile. He should get a big analog modular system and satisfy all of his sexual frustrations. See this topic: http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-719.html

Another topic is brewing here...

My lovelife has not quite reached the complexity of my patches and I would like to keep it that way (ask Wan, he saw may harpsichord). I´ll settle for something to keep me warm at night and indeed; large modulars fit that bill. I just wish they weren´t so tempramental the morning after; I found it best to wake them up, then ignore them untill after the coffee.
