Actually they should be facing downwards Embarassed , otherwise the components would get in the way if you mount it behond a panel.
This also seems to be correct if I compare the layout with he schematic.

It took me a couple of tries to get it working probably due to my not so good soldering skills but it does now work and makes some quite interesting sounds.
I am not planning to mount this in a box as of yet but now I am looking at what I can build to go with this bleepy machine.
It seems most people favor a sequencer so I will look for a simple beginner friendly sequencer on these forum sites.

It has been fun and a bit frustrating to build this and I am just pleased that I actually got it to work.
