The future of FMC- latest update |
|
|
December 15, 2003
Dear FMC friends and supporters,
As the holidays approach, we take a moment to reflect on our
accomplishments for the year and plan for the next. As always, part of=
the
planning involves raising the money that will sustain our work. If you=
support the FMC, we ask you help to ensure its future through a
tax-deductible donation of any size. You can donate online at
https://www.futureofmusic.org/donate.cfm. If just half the folks on our=
mailing list each give us $25, we will be well on the way to covering o=
ur
basic operating expenses for 2004.
The Future of Music Coalition was started in June 2000. Over the past t=
hree
years, we have conducted extensive research on radio deregulation, arti=
sts
and healthcare, and music industry contracts. We've testified before =
the
Senate, FCC, FTC and Copyright Office. We've ensured artists' voices a=
re
heard in policy debates concerning webcasting, digital downloads, copyr=
ight
issues and emerging business models. We've hosted three Future of Music=
Policy Summits, with hundreds of musicians attending for free via our
artist scholarships. We've spoken at dozens of conferences, forums an=
d
workshops. We've spent countless hours explaining the nuances of these
complicated issues to reporters, policymakers and citizens. And our
electronic newsletter helps thousands of musicians and music fans stay
current with developments in the fast-moving music/technology space. =
Our participation has had a visible impact on the policies that affect
musicians and the public. Speaking about our 2002 report, "Radio
Deregulation: Has It Served Citizens and Musicians?" FCC Commissioner
Jonathan Adelstein said:
"What Future of Music did was very rare, because generally not-for-prof=
its
are interest groups that don't have the resources and time to do someth=
ing
in a comprehensive way=8A One day, other groups like this will look bac=
k and
wish they had done more. The Future of Music study highlighted and
heightened the issue of huge deregulation so that the majority [of
commissioners] couldn't stomach deregulating radio any further. Their s=
tudy
was profound because it hit on something we had on the record. If a lot=
of
our studies had been trumped by other nonprofits, it might have changed=
the
whole discussion." (Dallas Observer, June 2003)
We're proud of what we've done so far, but in 2004 we would like to do =
even
more, and to do that we're going to need a bigger budget. We sincerely
appreciate the funding we've received from foundations, advocacy
organizations, businesses, unions, and personal donations. Without this=
support we would not be here today. And if we weren't here today...we
wouldn't have been able to achieve this important list of accomplishmen=
ts:
http://www.futureofmusic.org/accomplishments.cfm
In 2004 and beyond, our efforts continue. We will analyze how the
ownership structures that dominate radio and the music industry impact
musicians and citizens. We will doggedly pursue expanded opportunities=
for
artists, like Low Power FM, public performance royalties and legitimate=
digital distribution systems. We will convene a fourth Future of Music=
Policy Summit from May 2 - 4, 2004, along with new events in Seattle an=
d
San Francisco.
We know that you support the work we've done because you get our
newsletters, you come to our conferences, you sign our petitions, you w=
rite
us inspiring letters and ask us the tough questions which make FMC more=
effective every year. Your contribution will help us do our job today =
and
ensure we can continue our work in the future. It doesn't matter wheth=
er
you can give a little or a lot -- it all helps and, again, FMC is a
registered 501(c)3 so all donations are tax-deductible. Taking a page =
out
of the NPR game book, we're even offering Future of Music logo T-shirts=
to
everyone who donates $150 or more.
There are three ways you can give:
1. via credit card on this secure page
https://www.futureofmusic.org/donate.cfm
2. via check at 1615 L Street, NW, Suite 520, Washington, DC 20036
3. via Paypal to the address paypal@futureofmusic.org
We thank you for your continued support. Have a wonderful holiday and =
we
hope to see you in 2004.
Sincerely,
Jenny Toomey
