Bob Moog has passed away |

| Bob Moog At Work In Asheville
Sadly Bob Moog died this afternoon. I think we all know how important he was to our love of music.
The following is from the the Moog web site: https://www.moogmusic.com/
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — August 21, 2005 — Bob died this afternoon at his home in Asheville, N.C. He was 71. Bob was diagnosed with brain cancer (glioblastoma multiforme or GBM) in late April 2005. He had received both radiation treatment and chemotherapy to help combat the disease. He is survived by his wife, Ileana, his five children, Laura Moog Lanier, Matthew Moog, Michelle Moog-Koussa, Renee Moog, and Miranda Richmond; and the mother of his children, Shirleigh Moog.
Bob was warm and outgoing. He enjoyed meeting people from all over the world. He especially appreciated what Ileana referred to as "the magical connection" between music-makers and their instruments.
A public Memorial Celebration is planned for The Orange Peel for noon, Wednesday, August 26th. Fans and friends can also direct their sympathies or remembrances to www.caringbridge.com/visit/bobmoog.
Bob's family has established The Bob Moog Foundation dedicated to the Advancement of Electronic Music in his memory. Many of his longtime collaborators including musicians, engineers and educators have agreed to sit on its executive board including David Borden, Wendy Carlos, Joel Chadabpe, John Eaton, David Mash, and Rick Wakeman. For more information about the foundation, contact Matthew Moog at mattmoog@yahoo.com.
We'll miss you Bob. _________________ Mark Mahoney

will be missed, but will never go away |

Yesterday I set up a tattoo apointment for today, an re-touched synth panel from a Buchla synth, refitted with Moog knobs, bridging the two different schools of synth design. Getting the tattoo today will mean even more to me now. I woke up and read this news, and it definitely hit me a lot harder than I would have expected. It is very sad, realizing all he did for music and technology. He will be missed, but no doubt he will never be forgotten. Everyone go jam on your favorite synthesizer today. I know I will, as soon as those moog knobs have been etched into my arm for good... _________________ music: teamabunai.org/oao

Very sad. I was lucky enough met him a couple of times back in the 60s and 70s. He was a warm, very kind, open and unassuming person. Through his work he changed the world.
We invited Bob to be the guest of honor at electro-music 2005. He spoke to me on the phone three times about it. Finally, he said he regrettably couldn't come because of personal reasons. Now, after learning of his serious illness we can speculate at what that might have meant.
Bob Moog was an inspirational person. He was very productive up until the end of his life. His analog modular instruments were the most influential when he revolutionized electronic music in the 1960s, and the Moog Voyager and new Moog Etherwave are among the most desired instruments of today. The "Moog sound" is still the gold standard by which everything else is compared.
To me, Bob's openness and warmth, his love of music and people are at least as inspirational has his technical accomplishments. The best way to honor him will be for of us to try to be more like Bob Moog in the way we are with people.
Our heart felt condolences to his family. _________________ --Howard

Bob Moog will be missed and will surely be remembered. He has left quite a legacy and will forever be a part of western music history.
When I get home today I'll open the windows and crank up my 'lil old Moog real loud and just doodle around for a while, giving a sort of salute in the form of resonant filter sweeps and detuned sawtooth leads. I'm sure a lot of others will be doing something similar all over the world.
Thanks for the inspiration, Dr. Moog. _________________ Dave Peck |

Of cource I too am very sadened by this. At the moment I can't think anything apropriate to write so I'll keep silent for a moment.
On the relatively bright side; left and right people are setting up initiatives to remember Moog and I think it's a bit of a beam of light that these might bring some things to the atention of people that might otherwise have missed interesting bits of history (that came out all wrong but you know what I mean).
I just got a call from a friend who runs a radio show. Next saturday he wanted to do a special on Moog's legacy and hoped I might have some tips or would be able to be there. Now, I have to be in Berlin then but I do have a interesting opening here. If anybody has any interesting stories on Bob that he thinks represent him well or sugestions for music to play then you could email them to bt1100b AT gmail DOT com and Roy will read and play your stories and song sugestions if at all possible. This show is called "electro nation" and will br broadcasted through the web as well from the stream at www.kinkfm.com
This is a show aimed at a young audience and I think it's a great chance to share some history with a young audience that may not know much of it, all over the world. Roy is a great guy, b.t.w., didn't blink a eye when I played White Noise in his show on dance music so I like to support him where possible. _________________ Kassen |

This is the end of an era. Bob was one of the true innovators who changed a major part of the late twentieth century by changing the sounds we heard around us. When I wrote about Jean-Jacques Perrey and Bob Moog for my university dissertation, who would have thought that five years later I would count both these innovative men among my friends. It was so fantastic to interview Bob last year for the Switched On radio show and hear his wonderful stories about Raymond Scott, Keith Emerson, and all the people he had worked with on his journey. Bob may have described himself as 'just an electronics geek', which shows just quite how modest and humourous Moog could be - Moog made geeks COOL.
And let's not forget his great contribution to the theremin - Moog is the man who remains the greatest influence on both the theremin and the synthesizer - by producing portable, affordable instruments to allow even more of us to enjoy music making, from the Etherwave to the Mini-Moog and the latest Etherwave Pro. It was a great priviledge to demo the latter in Demark last year to a mighty congregation of Moog fans. I'll never forget walking down the red carpet to the squat-cum-warehouse that was the venue with Bob as local lads were spraypainting graffiti on the wall! (the building was about to be demolished) - a strange greeting for a legend!
Thanks Bob for inspiring me, for your talents, generosity and time you've given to all of your customers over the years. Long may Moog Music continue! Bob's gone to the big synth-maker in the sky - there will be an electric storm tonight!
Susi

during my first semester at Berklee Bob Moog was invited to visit the Music Synthesis Department (where I was studying). He comes in in our room where our teacher was talking about analog synthesis so he asks Bob why on his synths resonance is called "Q". He thinks a moment then says: "I don't know" _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

i have 2 stories:
1. i saw bob give a lecture at lincoln labs (an mit research facillity that largely does defense work). he was talking largely about the theremin, but didn't have one with him. in order to "demonstrate", he had the av guy play a recording of clara rockmore while he played "air theremin" on stage....all this for a straight crowd of non musicians. his personality won out, and the talk was very well recieved.
2. my band (which at the time had 4 theremins, 3 of which were big briars) was performing an evening concert at the berklee school of music cafateria. our music is anti academic, and it wasn't really loved by many of the students (including a bunch who came to see us with a mutual friend). bob was in town for something else, and came by to see/hear us....he really seemed to enjoy what we did, and had comments that showed he was listening. the students with the mutual friend really hated what we did, but stood in awe when they realized who was giving us such praise:)

Q is a standard engineering term for a bandpass filter's peakiness; it stands for Quality. |

Mohoyoho wrote: | Is it peakness or width? |
It refers to the presence or absence of a resonant peak, not the filter width. For example, a 12 dB per octave filter can have a high resonant peak or no resonant peak, but the (band)width is still 12dB per octave. _________________ Dave Peck |
