Here's how my Sound Lab looks right now. Very Happy There's nothing inside it yet but it will be finished soon. The manual gate button is missing too. Razz

I'm also having trouble finding 1/4W 5% resistors with the values 200k, 20k, 2M and 3M, but I'll figure something out... Confused

Nope, I've tried electrokit, trimlog and elfa... I guess I have to use two resistors in series instead. I think it could work if I mount them vertically.

wow thats really nice/slick, you got those sexy knobs I cant find , where did you get them from? is it black laminated wood?

I had weird results with resistors , use accurate ones when joining them i got some really far off results. this program is great if you want parralell
http://www.computertorture.com/noncompliant/parallel/ gives you a table of possible combinations.

Nope, those are plastic knobs, just the cheapest I could get. I bought them from www.trimlog.se ( http://www.trimlog.se/butik/products.asp?varugrupp2=Ratt%20-%206mm%20axel ).

Hmmm, havn't thought about that... I think I will use 5% in series anyway, I'll just measure them before I mount them ^_^

If you are really stuck, i've got those values in my spares collection, i'm sure we could come to an arrangement.

Really? That would be great! :D

The 5% 1/4W resistors that I need is:

500 (2)
20k (8)
200k (4)
620k (1)
2M (2)
3M (1)

It would be great if we could come to an arrangement. :D

Be sure to put up a sound sample when you are finished! I'm planning on building that SL from MusicFromOuterSpace in the coming months.

Sorry to jump in, but it sorta is on track. A while ago I made the sample and hold and I didn't have a 330k resistor so I put two in parallel.
Well without thinking I assumed a 300K in parallel with a 30K would make 330k is this correct? Does series or parallel make a diff with resistors?
I would think not? I know it seems like a silly question.

It shows my electronic ignorance and newbism

Resistors in serial are added. 300K in series with 30K is 330K. Parallel is more complicated.

If there are just to the resistors in parallel the equation is

Reffective = (R1 * R2)/(R1 + R2)

It's called the product over sum rule.

So I reckon I should get out the old solder braid and put'em in series. Maybe thats why its acting up.

How bout caps 2x 1uf in parallel = 2uf? Or is it the same type of theory

300k in parallel with 30k would make (300k*30k)/(300k+30k)~27k right?
300k in series with 30 would make 330 k Smile I think...

You are right. Caps in parallel - add the two values together. It's the opposite of resistors.

Learning all the time. Well the rate pot on my S&H seems to bunch up real bad about half way through and the said resistor is in line with the pot
so I bet when I put em in series, boo yah. Its gonna work. Hopefully I haven't damaged anything. It seems to work fine excepy for the rate.

Hey thanks for your help MOSC and Pehr(and sorry for the thread hijack)

I found that while impossible to find over here at 5%, they were pretty much stock items everywhere at 1%, which I guess is even better anyway. Since I needed to buy those 100 at a time, if anyone in or near the Netherlands needs some 200k, 20k or 2M, I have plenty left... The only one I couldn't find in the end was the 3M one.

The 2M I made from 1M*2 in series.
The 3M I made from a 1M8 and a 1M2 in series which are heaps easier to find.
Just be sure to check the total before you put it in.
Anything you can't find in 5% is better in 1%

Here's another trick that might be helpful. 1%, 5% and 10% resistors are virtually all the same, they are just speced to be closer to the exact value. So, if you have a bunch of 10% 10K resistors for example, and the spec is for 5% ones, just measure the ones you have. If the value is withing 5% of 10K (9500 and 10500) then consider it as a 5%. The same trick can be used to find resistors that are within 1% of the specified value. Sometimes you'll be lucky and find some good ones. The resistors themselves won't age any differently.

Alright, alright sweet all done. Nice sound file. I'm about to post some completed photos I finally got from a friend.

Ever hear of the Tall Dwarves? I think they are/were from New Zealand
anyway 2 guys they moved apart after awhile and started sending Tracks back and forth to make their records. Thay did an Album were they asked fans to send tape loops or single tracks and they recorded an album around them. Pretty sweet record. Well maybe a International
Sound Lab recording is in order. Huh Huh maybe. Record a track and pass it on. Just a thought.

Thanks! Cool

I'm already building a second one, and soon there will be a sequencer and a keyboard for them
