I got out the camera this arvo, so it's time for a bit of show and tell.
Here's a pic of an old organ which I found in the op-shop yesterday.
I'm hoping I can extract a CV and Gate from it to run my soundlab.
It looks pretty old, its a Balearni, Model No 403.
Well at the very least it will provide all the hardware for 2 * 3 octave keyboards, and a chunky old PSU, and some other bits, all for AU$30
(It's even got a picture of the schem glued to the inside of the old chipboard case!)

I'm in Australia, too, and, I have one almost exactly the same .. except ... Mine has a drum board (based on a 75hc154), and I got the legs with it!
http://www.musostuff.com/images/product/00000392.jpg

I've made some observations of the internals, we'll have to keep in touch!

http://users.tpg.com.au/reveng/baleani-a.gif

I also have a thing called an Orgatron, which is a monophonic voltage controlled organ thing, appears to be some 555s and a few tabs. I'll try post some pics for ya.

Yeah definately,
Mine came with the legs/speaker box too.
That was the first thing to go. Takes up too much space for my setup.
I did some research on the circuitry and it seems it produces notes using a master clock feeding a tone generator which has it output "divided" depending on which octave you are playing. There's no CV or Gate signal (which is what I want) So I've already begun completely re-building the guts. I've removed everything except the two keyboards and the "spring" switches which they operate. I'm looking at building the keyboard based on a constant current source which Ray designed
http://www.musicfromouterspace.com/analogsynth/keybrdcontroller.html
That's not to say that the original ciruitry can't be put to good use, I'm also working on another project (in my head) which will convert that to what is basically a chromatic "noise box". And the original PSU is a practice amp just waiting to be teamed with a decent (new) driver in a cool box +overdrive circuit.
These are the plans,
I've got two weeks holiday, so I better go and make a start on it!! Rolling Eyes
I'm putting a new precision +/- 15V PSU in the Baleani box and plan to make it the hub of my DIY synth setup.

I just had a look at the pics. That drum section looks interesting. If it's anything like the advanced circuitry I found in mine Shocked there'll be a separate PCB for each drum Smile which would actually be very cool from a circuit hacking point of view.
The Orgatron looks even cooler. The sound it makes can't possibly justify the weight so warm up your soldering iron and start making space for a new DIY synth!!
I'm thinking about covering the woodgrain laminate with black carpet! And maybe some big chrome corner covers like you get on bass bins!!
Can't wait.

Yay! I got one too Very Happy

Bought it at a second hand shop for 50 Swedish Kronor ~ $6.50

Two nice keyboards with long keys and a one octave pedal keyboard.

Hey Pehr,
Now that looks very sweet indeed!!
I'm gonna use mine as the base for my whole DIY synth.
That one looks even better. 2*3.5+1!!!
If you want a copy of the precision +/-15V supply let me know.
Have fun.
Andrew

the orgatron is battery powered, and extremely light
it's 85% air

I had it going again last night, I should post samples when I get around to putting in an external out.

Yes, that is what I am going to do too, but before I build a huge modular I want to control my Sound Labs with it.

I would really like a copy of that power supply Very Happy
I assume that it works fine with Rays single bus CV?

Soon I'm going to open it and remove unnecessary parts and hopefully cut of the top part with the 2*3.5 keyboards. Right now it is a little too big. Shocked

Well I'm starting with the +/-15V PSU. Which will cover another synth board I have that runs off +/-15V. These two rails I run through a 7812/7912 pair and some caps to derive the SL (+/-12V) supply. These rails can then be run through a 7805/7905 pair for whatever needs 5V (if anything). That's the idea.
The 15V circuit is a precision regulator where I can actually dial up exactly +/-15V to come out of it. If you only want +/-12V for the SL a suitable transformer, regulators, & caps should do it. I've already built this one so I want to put it to good use.

I'm having trouble finding any replacement for LT1112 for the single bus PCB. Could I use LF412 instead?

Ray says the TL082 and the CA3240 are ok replacements. I'll probably get one from Farnell but they are expensive (AU$16 each). I think Farnell are international. Postage to Sweden for something that small is probably not much more than to Nambucca anyway Laughing
Copy all this into your URL,

http://au.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSearch/searchPage2.jsp?N=1000156+401&=Electrical&No=0&Ntt=&Ntk=&comSearch=true

Good luck.

Great! TL082 is easy to find and very cheap if compared to the LF412. I think I'll use that one Smile

Yay! I opened my organ today and removed the 1 octave pedal keyboard. I also removed the pedal to the right which I might be able to use and I also found a spring reverb. surprise

Hey Pehr,
Have a look at this site,
http://www.organservice.com/crm/topdividers.htm#tosindex
it's info on all the old Top Octave Synth Chips like the M087B which runs my (and your?) Baleani Organ.
Now combine this info with Daniel's Oz.pdf
http://files.electro-music.com/phpbb-files/oz.pdf
And you have a whole new synth project to build from the chip which you pull out of your organ. Cool

Just wanted to let you in on a thing I discovered yesterday.
The springs which contact the bus bar when you press a key normally sit on a second bus bar when they are off. This second bus bar needs to be insulated when you convert the keyboard, otherwise it will short out your resistor ladder.
You can remove the bus bars completely but I covered mine with 3mm heatshrink instead. Take out the other one and gently polish it with some 1200 Wet & dry paper to improve the switching action.
I've taken a photo which might clarify it. I'll attach it later if you want.
See ya,
Andrew

Nah, I just have a SN7403N-chip. Don't know what I can do with it... it is soldered to the pcb without a socket too Sad

The bus system in my organ was really messy and the mechanical parts continued down into the lower part of the organ (the "foot" part), which I want to remove. So I will build a whole new bus system somehow...

Here's a pic of where the Baleanot is at.
Up top is the lower keyboard, the upper one sits over just about everything else in this shot. Down the bottom is my new back panel, then left to right we have, the +/-18V toroidal, the +/-15V precision power board, my +/-12V adaptor board, and the first of two single bus to CV/Gate boards.
I'm almost ready to finish the wiring off and then I can start "tinkling the ivories!" Well, they're actually a plastic of some kind!
