Whenever possible, I try to listen to stuff posted on the Online Music forum of electro-music.com.
We are working on some streaming stuff too. I've been listening to that. Jan Punter has been developing a great thing called Noodle Radio. It will be announced very soon. Soon we will be able to stream live jams from members studios. I think that'll be fun too. _________________ --Howard

this is great. i knew this would be a really diverse group, but i am really impressed. OS MUTANTES ARE AWESOME. that is definately one of my recent faves. that old crazy brazillian shit is great. I have been exposed to a lot more electronic music over the past few years, but I was always too picky. I like Mouse on Mars a lot, especially Niun Nigung (spelling?). muziq is growing on me more lately, i really really like brace yourself. very warm sound. there are a lot of my all time favs listed already, Nick Drake really moves me. Coltrane hits me really hard, to the ground, i am dead. very recently i listened to koushik and was impressed. i will definately check out the forum's work. thanks for all the posts. |

I presume you are talking Mike Paradinas? The 1st 2 LP's are the best (Tango 'n' Vectif, Bluff Limbo)- he kind of looses it after that (too many tracks that sound the same- so no quality control).
I'm surprised that you don't mention Faust- as you think OS Mutantes are so cool. If you do not know Faust, I recommend getting either 'So Far' or 'Faust 4' first, then listen to 'The Faust Tapes' followed by 'Munich and elsewhere' (also known as 71 minutes of Faust and finally the first Faust LP (the one with the X-ray fist on the cover)- as this one is quite difficult (but totally brilliant too!).
I mentioned Alice Coltrane- not John. Alice is John's wife and made a stunning LP called 'Journey in Satchidananda' which I can't recommend enough and urge that everyone here on E-M listens to. A sort of lysergic mix of modern jazz and classical Indian music.

I should of also added Suicide to that list too. One of my all time favourite rock and roll Farfisa organ combo's. |

Yeah! Aavikko! I also like Oleg Kostrow (also on Solnze Records).
I listen to micromusic.net radio every once in a while. Sbindon and Future-eater are my favorites.
Then there's always the whole mess of everything, from Booker T and the MGs to Willie Nelson's, "Time of the Preacher." It's hard for me to make a good mix tape when entertaining guests at a dinner party. There's always the "What the hell?" said from someone.... |

Yeah, I knew who you were talking about. I have that record right here in my office. I should put it on now matteroffactly. I had to dremel my turntable to play this record, it had this lip on it that bumped into part of the "arm holder" - very much worth the dremeling.Transconfiguration is also a great one. But I was talking about John. |

I'm kinda in two minds about John Coltrane. Controversial I know, but I prefer Ornette Coleman. He's just more wigged out :)
Sun Ra's done some pretty awful stuff too- but he gets my vote for his 'pop music' that he did :)
But you must check out Faust. There are just no two ways about it!
"Universal Consciousness" is another good one by Alice C. The string arrangements are by Ornette C too- so out of tune, yet so beautiful :) |

I can definately feel that. Ornette Coleman was a visionary. He set the stage for the more that type of jazz, whatever you want to call it, tonal or something, away from bebop. There are a lot of arguements that he did what everyone was scared to do, or just did it first when everyone was thinking it.
Sun Ra, Sun Ha, just kidding, but really you aren't from Jupiter. Supersonic Jazz and El is a Sound of Joy are my two faves. That guy was something else, but I really respect his harmony choices. He was really advanced, a prodigy as a child. No one knew he could sight read everything when he was 12.
With John Coltrane I don't know what it is but it is. Something happens and I don't even like to talk about it, because I just feel stupid when I talk. You just have to listen. He was a saxophone, it wasn't just an instument anymore. I will shut up now.
I also like Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Jackson and his computer band, Squarepusher (most), Plaid, and a shit ton of reggae and the Stooges. |

Man that album is amazing. Well got kicked off the computer at work and reprimanded. Bastards. So I'm at the library. Good thing I suppose. Nice to see some new posts.
dig that Yellow Magic too, I just got that a while ago. Check out the
Bruce Haack doc. if you can its sweet.
Things I've been listening to lately: What no Smiths fans?, Hampton Grease Band(F'n sweetest guitarists ever), fIREHOSE/Minutemen, The Byrds(Clarence White R.I.P.), Cindi Lauper, Dead Milkmen. Just a few things I spun on the turntable lately. Well great to be back and see y'all later. _________________ "your stripes are killer bro" Last edited by Wild Zebra on Wed Oct 05, 2005 6:31 am; edited 3 times in total |

early, mid or late?
I've seen them live 4 times. They were good on the first tour (1981) but the subsequent tours were dissapointing (probably because of the lack of Franke's massive modular sequencing system- which looked totally mental in the dark!- One for the Star Trek fans :D )
My favourite TD Lp's were Electronic Meditation, Alpha Centuri, Atem and Phaedra- but I rarely play them these days- preferring 'Popul Vuh', the band they (IMO) ripped off (although the first 3 TD lp's are totally original- it was the sequencer that killed them!!- I suppose I shouldn't say that here?!!). |

Tom, I still think Ricochet is pretty good, but some of that percussion stuff is pathetic. Popul Vuh is still hot though. Recommended! And.. David Borden´s Mother Mallard´s Portable Masterpiece Company... _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

whoops- forgot to mention Zeit- a great LP (with Mr Popul Vuh on Moog too :) ) Why people don't make music like this anymore? I'm a big fan of electro-acoustic stuff. But interestingly enough, most of the early TD stuff is electro-acoustic too.
I'm listening to Ivor Cutler right now (with Jammy Smears) |

Stein, Ricochet is supposed to be pulled from 40 hours of live improvisation taken from the tour of Europe 74-75.
Is it? 'Cos I've got some old bootlegs from around that time and these are pretty poor compared to the pure power of Ricochet (yes I suppose I could stretch to this but I usually end up arguing with my Wife over this- as she prefers Rubycon- which too is a fine LP.- One for the Pink Floys fans). Anyway, I reckon Ricochet is more of a studio LP- drawn from the rehearsals???
Nice pix of the mothermallard stuff- were they good? It's funny cos all that gear looks great- but we're still talking monophonic lines here! |

I am no expert on TD at all. I think this is correct though.. that the album is a result of tangetizing various live recordings/ studio jams . There are probably thousands of websites out there dedicated to violent discussions about Ricochet.
Borden and Mother Mallard : http://cuneiformrecords.com/bandshtml/borden.html
You can listen to stuff from "LIKE A DUCK TO WATER".
Quote: | Like A Duck To Water was Mother Mallard's 2nd & final release, and was originally released in 1976. The music is a unique and extremely enjoyable blend of space electronics (ala Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze), minimal music (Terry Riley, Philip Glass), and contemporary classical & electronics (Gordon Mumma, John Cage). This album showcases a uniquely American slant on synthesizer music by a band whose pioneering contributions to the genre had been forgotten until now. Includes the original album, 20' of previously unheard bonus material, and bonus CDRom material; a QuickTime video of the band in performance in 1976. With David Borden, Steve Drews & Judy Borsher.

More MMPMC:
http://www.mothermallard.cornell.edu/history.html
This page is a great read. Recommended.
......
Quote: | When we got to Trinity Church we found out that we hadn’t been billed as Mother Mallard or David Borden but as THE MOOG SYNTHESIZER. This kind of billing would dominate our appearances for the first few years, because no one else was performing with Moog Synthesizers except for Walter Carlos and Richard Teitelbaum. Carlos almost never performed live and Teitelbaum was in Europe. |
