MIDI and animation |
|
|
Hi all
Does anyone know of any animation package that can use MIDI? For example, where I could draw a keyboard and have the notes light up in response to MIDI note signals?
How cool would that be?
Cheers

Not strictly an animation package, but the programming language Java has a MIDI API. I've been toying for years with the idea to make a computer game that would use a midi keyboard as input device. You could for instance have 88 guns at the bottom of the screen that corresponded to the white keys on an 88 key keyboard, or use the modulation wheel to control the paddle in a breakout clone, etc. |

Google "vvvv", which is a modular "language" much like MAX/MSP or Pd, but geared for DirectX video (pc only) (Beta, working, and free)http://vvvv.meso.net/tiki-forums.html
Then there's another language called "Processing", which is somewhat like java. Which people are doing very cool stuff with. (free) http://processing.org/
Last, you could use something like Resolume, generate all the pictures of a keyboard that have keys lit, then use midi to trigger that picture. There's several other programs that could do this type of midi-> picture thing as well. (Arkaos for one) There's lots of freeware to do it also. |

Moth MAX/XSP (in the form of Jitter) and PD (GEM) have options doing visuals but I think many VJ packages support it too because MIDI controlers are cheap and usefull. _________________ Kassen |

There are midi extensions available for Macromedia Director. This means that midi input can be used for generating Showkwave 3D animations and more. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Oh, yeah, that's right! that would also mean you could instantly be cross platform. I'd take my sound elsewhere in that case because browsers typically don't support ASIO or Jack, not sure on the Mac front but I'd be (pleasantly) surprised if Mac browsers would suddenly do low-latency audio. _________________ Kassen |

AFAIK it is possible to do this too with non-browser shockwave apps or ordinary director desktop apps and the video output can be rendered.
On OS X all apps plug in to the Audio Core so yes.. you do have low latency audio in browsers too. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Oh, wow, that's quite nice. I wish Firefox for Linux would make flash output to Jack, at least as a option. It probably just a silly little library extra. _________________ Kassen |
