Espresso |
|
|
I just moved to the world of espresso coffee. Got one of these Bialetti espresso makers after Mark Vanuk showed me his at Different Skies. I got the smaller so-called three cup size though. Makes one cup as far as I can see.
Regular American coffee taste pretty good in it, but I bought some Italian Medaglia D'oro. Much better.
To my European friends, is this considered OK espresso?

I haven´t tasted that brand yet. I have been using those Bialettis for years, but then I also have some electric brewers that have a somewhat higher water pressure. The Bialettis won´t quite make the crema on top.
Anyway, the Bialettis are excellent for when I am on a trip or simply taking a stroll downtown. I always carry a small gas burner thingie in my bag too, so I can make myself some espresso ..whenever.
Howard, a cup of espresso is supposed to be small. But then a real coffee head will tend to make BIIIIG ones. I will post some cup pics later on when I get back home. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

you should ask PROs about espresso a cup of espresso is usually very strong but short (not comparable to american coffee in size and/or taste).
That coffee brand is not sold here (nor Gevalia ). You can only wonder why _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

Oh YES! I brew up one (or more) of these every morning.
They are known as "Waist Percolators" in the UK- because of their shape.
If you want the 'best' from these machines, remove the percolator from the heat just after the coffee pops through the nozzle. This will be the 'very best' of the brew. You then drink it in very small cups- or mix it with milk for a cappuccino. Espresso and Cappuccino are the ONLY types of coffee in Italy (I used to live in Rome and Pisa)- all the others are American ideas. I remember the Italians getting very specific about this!! (The same goes for different types of Pizza!!) |

American "coffee" is more like coffee flavoured tea. Coffee should NOT be transparent, if you look down in the cup then there should be wall of black, not some vaguely brown-ish luke-warm water.

It's heartening to know that in Italy, Cappuccino is drunk for breakfast while Espresso is drunk in the afternoon. And you wonder why the Italians are such crazy drivers?!!!!
If you are lucky enough to get to south Italy (including the Island of Sicily) you must discover the delights of the 'Granita'- a sort of 'slush-puppy' (does anyone have these outside of the UK?) crushed ice made with unrefined cane sugar and thick espresso coffee. Best eaten with brioche (and sometimes topped with thick whipped cream)- a few of these in the afternoon will bring you closer to your maker! |

Did you know the guy who sends the esspresso back is Angelo Badalementy who did most of Lynch's soundtracks?
I heard about it. When I was visiting Istanbull they told me about this fortunetelling craze there. Aparently there were places where you could order Turkish coffee and as a part of the deal you could turn your cup over and some woman would come tell you what your future would be.
That whole fortunetelling craze was quite interesting too, culturally. Of cource much of Turkey is very traditional and so when I was reading the airliner magazine they had horoscopes in a nod to this new fashion but for every sign (I read them all) there was lots and lots of mariage and childeren. It's still 2005 though only a few months left. She (or he, I'm dutch so that'd be legal) had better hurry up if she wants to get maried to me this year. A good start would be introducing herself...
v-un-v, I know this african restaurant where they have a coffee. If you want that one you need to order it when you get in since brewing it takes more then a hour. Comes in a ceramic bottle with a knot of straw used as a filter in the neck of the bottle. That one was quite good.... _________________ Kassen |

I had a cup of espresso this morning. I had a busy few hours at the hospital emergency room recovering for the resulting heart attack. Gotta go get another cup now...
Seriously, this stuff gives you quite a buzz. _________________ --Howard

...yes, nothing turns me off more quickly than see through coffee. i make very strong coffee in a french press...oftentimes, guests who generally drink their coffee black ask for some cream or milk. i've been buying the ground starbucks french roast for a while (it's the cheapest thing i can get that tastes drinkable to me). i think any good strong fresh roasted coffee is better than most of the cans, for esspresso, just grind it fine enough that you can't filter it with your teeth.
i did have a near dangerous espresso experience years ago. i was in downtown boston in the evening and wanted (needed) an iced coffee (it was hot and my caffene level was dangerously low). the coffee shop was getting ready to close, and had just tossed their iced coffee, so they poured a cup full of ice and started making espresso to fill the cup...i think it was 6 shots by the time they were done...and boy, was i wired! (that's not shock, it's "espresso eyes"!)

When I first moved to Miami, someone told me to try Cuban coffee.
I was in a Dunkin Donuts and noticed they had it. I figured it would be generic at best, but give me an idea if I wanted to go find some gourmet stuff. I ordered a Cuban coffee and one of those croissant sandwiches; they poured the coffee, and put the sandwich in the toaster.
While I was waiting for the sandwich to come out, I took the lid off the coffee and started to take a swig. The Cuban guy behind the counter started waving his arms and shouting "No! My freeeen, NO!" Staring in disbelief I said "what the ...?"
He handed me a short stack of thimble-cups, and gestured for me to pour the coffee into the little cup first. O-kaaaaay, I thought, is this some traditional thing, or is he just messing with the white boy? I poured the coffee, took the shot ...
... and I swear I could feel my pupils dilate. The caffeine was so intense - it was like that Simpson's episode when Homer found the electric comfey-chair, sat down, and had the Space Odyssey acid trip ... all that from one shot.
The Dunkin Donuts guy probably saved my life that day. Guillermo, my freeeen, respect. I haven't found good Cuban coffee in Tampa yet, but I'm ever on the lookout ...

Is that what the glass "jar" things with the filter you press through the watter to seperate it from the fine grind coffee is called? I need one of those but can't find it. Went into a store that I think should have dozens of those and they looked at me like I was asking for a timebomb or home-abortion kit. I had to explain it ten times, then the girl went "so, it runs on bateries, right?"
Then I gave up. _________________ Kassen |

...actually, that is the exact model i have.
i expect that one can get "more" coffee out of a percolator (as the coffee is heated and reinfused), but for taste (and ease of use) the french press is the best (imho).
kassen, i don't know if all the amazon.com products are available (or affordable) where you are, but they do have them.

Yeah, I can order stuff from Amazon, but that would make little sense for this. I'll turn the inner city upside down looking for one and if that doesn't work I could always order.
I should have looked more, but after the lady asked the questions about the bateries there was a huge thunderstorm so I went home and called it a day. _________________ Kassen |

Maybe the sales girl wasn't as out-of-it as you suggest. If one takes a few AA batteries and puts them in with the coffee before grinding the resulting coffee will give you quite a jolt. _________________ --Howard
