I want to build a +/-12 V DC power supply unit from this transformer

Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

But it says a.c. on it. What more do I need to get at +/-12 V DC PSU? Confused

You need the schematics for the rest of it. Check with DJ Justice. He might know of some very basic stuff you can find on the web. This style of PSU are simple and schematics are readily available. I am at work now though, so I have no way of finding this for you.

everything is pretty standard in that schematic, you shouldn't have very much trouble. you can replace the "integrated bridge rectifier" with 4 diodes oriented as shown (this is what makes it dc).

The power supply in that schmatic works very well, mine is good.

Except...

I'm gonna rebuild it one of these days, its a bit shoddy. Don't make it anything less than excellent build quality. Get screw terminal type capacitors, use spade connectors, etc, to make it modular and high quality.

Pehr,
Are you planing to use it with your SoundLab? If so will it work with a 12 volts supply? Confused

Hi Per Very Happy
Nope, I am planning to use it with a 16 Step Analog Sequencer.
I think the Sound Lab works with +/-12 V, but I already have a +/- 9 V PSU for it Smile

Hey Pehr,
Do not use 1N4148s they are small signal diodes.
You need some from the 1N400X series. They are recitifier diodes.
4001, 4002, 4004, 4007 etc. As the number goes up the voltage rating goes up. 4004 should be fine. They are 1A/400V.

BTW,
I checked with Ray and yes the SL works fine on +/-12V.

....i think just about anything would work here, remember, you are bringing the voltage down to 12vac before rectifing. so having a rating of 600 or 1000 volts doesn't mean much in this application. 1n4001 would be fine here. btw, there is nothing wrong with a rectifier assembly either.

Can you still get 4001s?

1n4001's are listed at mouser...there seems to be no problem getting them (at least in the states).

Great! Very Happy I've got four 1N4002's that I dug out from an old organ. They might work...

Cool! I was thinking of making that my next project as well. I'll let you go first and make all the mistakes! Very Happy

I was just being a smart arse.
Heaps of places don't stock the 4001 or 4002 because the 4004 does the same thing in the same space for the same price.
