Forum upgrade completed. Subject description: Many new features. Much more stable software |
 |
|
We are pleased to have completed the much anticipated upgrade of the forum software. Thanks to the many people who work on open source software, and to the electro-music.com moderators that helped me with testing.
Please post to this forum as you uncover problems or inconsistencies.
Aside from many cosmetic changes, a significant improvement is that information about your login and when you read topics is kept in the database now, not on a cookie on your browser. Thus, you won't loose track of unread topics or messages.
We have been waiting for this software upgrade for many months. Now the way is clear for coding more features. Last edited by mosc on Sun Nov 06, 2005 3:03 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I forgot to mention. One undesired side effect of this upgrade is that we loose all information on your previous login time, so all messages are considered having been read. As time goes on, this will of course become unimportant. _________________ --Howard

You are right. The attachments aren´t visible. These are db entries, and I am sure the info hasn´t been lost. The files on the server are still there too. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Yes, I didn't catch that problem because I can see the attachments when using my account because I have admin permissions. When I log in as a user without admin permissions, there are no attachment. The good news is that they are there. When I figure out where the problem is I'll fix it. Sorry for the incovenience and thanks for the heads up. _________________ --Howard

Yes, it was a permissions thing. I had to go in an set individual permissions for all 80 forums for both guests and registered users. I think it should work pretty well now.
Please let me know if there are any other problems observed.

it looks like a great update. I just noticed that "view unread posts" has taken the place of " view posts since last visit" and that it's quite different. I have to get used to it. just to let you know I don't know if it's because I am not accustomed to this new feature but could it be possible to reverse to the old setting. it seems more reasonable: if you post a new message and click on "view unread posts" you will not see it. does it make sense? |

Yes, that last visit stuff is history. The implication was that you'd catch up with the entire forum on each visit. This keeps lots of stuff in the database includeing when you read each topic. I'm going to post a seprate explaination of that one. Also, be sure to check out View Your Posts which is on the index page. It's really useful too. I'm going to add it to the topics listing page later today after some more coffee... _________________ --Howard

the alternative is to use "View new posts in the last week" to get similar results as "view posts since last visit" _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

I also miss that unread posts become marked as read if you log out and log in again... |
Sorry that this is going. If you want, you can mark all post as read when you log out. Go to the forum index page and there is a link there near the upper right.
Hope that will help. _________________ --Howard

my solution is:
go to the forum index, look for
| Quote: | You last visited on Today, at 12:15 am
The time now is Fri Nov 04, 2005 9:27 am
All times are UTC + 1 | (for example) and remember when you left
click on
| Quote: | | View new posts in the last week |
check those threads that have new posts after the time you left.
I know, it's not very functional and/or elegant but I haven't figured out anything better sofar. Anyone else _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

Hi all,
I see some of us (many?) doesn't like the new functionality and want the old behaviour back. I think that's remarkable....
Imho the way it works now is much better. In the past i did regularly loose some unread posts due to the fact that when a session was broken the unread marks were destroyed. And it was very difficult and tedious for me to find the messages i didn't read.
Now they are always there, so that is a big boon. And when i've read a message it is removed from the list instantly. So i only have to click the topmost entry over and over to get to all the messages. Couldn't be easier...(especcialy with my voicerecognition software, but even by hand).
And messages i don't want to read are removed by the "mark all forums read" option.
I do have to adjust my behaviour to the new situation. But that's a price i have to pay for this new functionality. I get the feeling this need for adjusting the behaviour is what makes it unliked by the users (ehhh we).
The functionality is actually more accurate but we aren't used to it so we don't like it. It may be that this is due to the fact that people just don't like adjusting their usual behaviour....even if new behaviour can be more efficient/effective. What do you think?
Thanks you mosc for trying to give us more advanced options. I do appreciate it.
