I know this has been discussed.

This wish list feature would allow us to exclude certain modules (or knobs, you tell me) from variations. In other words, certain modules would have one set of settings which would not change when you change variations.

One handy live use case would be to exclude patch volume/mute status. Thus once you mute a patch, when you change variations you do not have to mute it again (if it is not muted in the other variations) ...

This is the number one problem with the variation system!

There is a solution for the muting of a patch... I use variation 8 as the silent one ... now I can play the other variations, and can mute the system by hitting variation 8 ... so it eats up one of them ... sometimes its not so bad ...

Damn, I did this huge bass patch ... its called four_dz

It is tedious, but I usually copy/paste a good setup to all variations, then tweak each variation accordingly, leaving modules that I want static across all variations alone. I have used this in certain contexts and it works alright, especially considering that the sequencer modules do not reset or skip or miss a beat when you switch variations.

I use the copy/paste approach as well - the problem arises when you discover that you want to tweak, say, four modules to a different value across all variations AFTER you've copied and made different adjustments in variations 1-8.

One "work around" that Clavia might consider, is that if a knob is assigned to the "global" area, then it cannot be changed via variations. Because, then it wouldn't still be global (in the programming sense of the word), would it?

I have no idea how this would effect current patches or not, but I guess it could be a system/patch setup feature to enable/disable this type of functioning.

Suggestions for workarounds are discussed here:
