1st time PSU builder need advice. |
|
|
Howdy all, I'm about to have a few modules and am going to start my very first modular. So I need a PSU figure I'll make this one http://www.musicfromouterspace.com/analogsynth/powersupply.html So what does a first timer need to know. How many modules will it accomadate?, What sort of adapters can I use to plug them up? Whats the best way not to electricute myself? I'm no stranger to DIY just haven't made a PSU yet. So, any help would be great. _________________ "your stripes are killer bro" |

I've built that PSU and it works perfect. Just use a transformer like the one shown in this topic. I choose a 500 mA transformer but there are those that can produce up to 2000 mA or more. More mA = more modules |

...that looks like a good design..simple, low parts count, etc.
i built one for the paia vocoder several years ago using the schematic supplied in radio shack books (radio shack is like malpin, but in the states). since radio shack sells parts, this design used 2 separate transformers....1 is preferable.
you can also use discrete diodes rather than in integrated bridge rectifier if they are more easily available.

And is there a "patch bay" for lack of better words, that I can have offboard to plug the modules into. Like a male\female setup. _________________ "your stripes are killer bro" |

otay, I haven't even got the modules yet. So when I get a little closer I'll ask a few more questions. Just kind of wanted a heads up. I may be p.m.'n you in the not so distant future Pehr. I'm making the 16 step seq too so I may need some more advice.
thanks for the help so far _________________ "your stripes are killer bro" |

Hey Zeb,
If you can afford the transformer (go torroidal if possible) I'd recommend 1A on each rail (+&-). That should be fine for quite a while. Use some type of universal edge type power connector on each module, and as you build them, check what they draw (mA) then write this next to the power connector for that module. When you get to about 80% of your supply's capacity, start building another PSU. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

Are you guys talking about the sequencer on Ray's site? _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

Do we want a stripboard layout of that?
I could make it the third choice in my poll.
Instead of just "some 4017 sequencer" _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

I already bought the boards when the were on sale. I'll need a supply for that, but I need one for some of Ray's modules I'm getting. A while back I was contacted by a feller who had made some of Rays modules and wanted to know if I wanted to buy them. I recently did. Figured I'd be a nice jump start into a modular type thing. I got LP VCF, Multiwave LFO, Signal to Gate, State Variable VCF, and S&H with White noise. So never having seperate modules and never building a PSU figured I'd ask. Now I ask should I buy or build? If buy, any recommendations. _________________ "your stripes are killer bro" |

I would build it, mostly 'cos I've already got a lot of the parts for that kind of stuff. (I stocked up before I left Jaycar)
Like I said at the top go for 1-2A per rail. Use 4 pin connectors for each module and make one of the pins a Digital (or dirty) ground. It'll come in handy later, believe me.
I'd probably base it on the one Ray's got on his site. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

Ahhh what? Sorry I'm still kind of an idiot when it comes to this stuff although I have been successful building some things> I don't understand alot of what I'm doing. I'm still way off on needing the supply. My modules have not arrived yet. So I got a little time to figure it out.. Thanks for all the help so far _________________ "your stripes are killer bro" |

That's cool,
I'm still learning about "preload" on sequencers to create random steps!!
Just take a look at Ray's PSUs, and give me a holler when you want something cleared up. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |
