Waldorfians stand forth! |
|
|
I'm curious about the Waldorfian contingent on electro-music.
We know that 99.9% of us have a Clavia modular . But who has Waldorfs and what do you think of them?
Mohoyoho has openly admitted to Waldorfery. So do I.
Mine is a grey/blue Q, the wooden endcheeks model. I really dig this instrument! The synth engine, the design and the build quality - all are top notch in my book. The whole thing conveys a feeling of true passion for synthesizers. The designers must've been really dedicated. I'd love to see the Waldorf tradition being carried on!
So, tell us about yours. Of course, PPGs are valid too!

I have a MicroWave 1...
Great machine, luckily you can edit it very well through MIDI with a
program like SoundDiver or SoundTower's MWaveEdit.
I really dig the filter on this machine, it's super juicy. It kind of has the
same 'wetness' as the Waldorf Pulse, but it seems slightly more precise
than the one of the Pulse. I never got a grip on the Pulse, the sound was
always too wide to my taste... it didn't fit in any mix (unless you use loads
of EQ, and that defeats the purpose of having a great synth imho).
One of the great virtues of the filter is that if you want, you can make
those digital oscillators sound totally analogue (not that you always want
that of course!).
Other goodies are the text to speech programme on the Atari (which by
the way runs fine on STeem), multi-timbrality, and multi-outs. 8-Voice
polyphony is very usefull too!
To sum up: Love the machine, it'll never leave my studio.
Regards,

I love my Waldorfs. Last night I was working with my Blue Q rack and was making a step sequence. I absolutely am amazed at the sonic range and capabilities of the Q. The mod matrix is so extensive, and the two wavetabes make this a classic digital synth. I had it tied to my Voyager via midi last night and was making some majestic sounds.
The Microwave XT is just an insane instrument. What a distinctive voice! I still have a lot to learn about it. Those modifiers are pretty powerful. I like the way it was designed for live use and tweaking.
Like you guys, I am curious as to the future of Waldorf. I hope whoever bought it will continue the tradition of making innovative and distinctive instruments. My fear is that it will rob the current technology, make soft synths and innovate nothing. _________________ Mark Mahoney

I don´t have a Waldorf yet, but I really like many of the Waldorf synths. Clearly manufacturing such beasts in Europe is pretty expensive. I would love to see the new Waldorf keep the excellent german R&D/design part of it and then manufacture the hardware products in China.
What about a Waldorf PPG Wave 3 for 999 euro? I would love to see a hardware PPG Wave 2.3 clone ( with some modern extras ). _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Wasn't that more or less what the original Microwave was meant to be? Whatever the intention was, I still want one of those. Doesn't seem like much of a chance bartering for The Why Projects MW... - can't blame him, my Q will stay forever.

True. But imagine this one reinvented and manufactured in China.

Ack! Behold the Wave! I wouldn't mind an affordable recreation at all.
Incidentally, there's one for sale in Oslo if anybody is interested, very rare shadow 61 keys (as if Waves aren't rare already...) - although he owner is wavering, sometimes it's not for sale... and they never go cheap of course.

Pulse plus and micro q are in my rack.
Have not used them in awhile.
I love the raw sound of the pulse oscillators.
I am eager to drive the pulse with with the Future Retro mobius.
The micro q is the freak in the rack ,bright yellow, 25 voices,Fx, audio in,
random patch mode, along with the pulse+ random patch mode produce
sounds that are ..... well random but inspirational.
I almost bought an Attack Drum Module once but opted for a Korg ms2000r.
I am happy to hear that Waldorf may be ressurected . _________________ "I'm the transmitter' I give information."

Well... I'm a Pulse owner and I can clearly say that it is one of the most powerful and musical synth I've ever had !
I love it, I'll never sell my pulse. It can do so much things with so much heat !
I owned a microwave 1, a fantastic machine too that I sold for financial reasons A pure digital, highly complex if needed sound, and as warm as most analog synths due to its analog filter. A pure jewel !
I'll buy it back one day...
I'd like to see a new Waldorf synth... |

I own a Microwave I and was thinking about another Pulse Plus.
Instead I opted for a G2 Engine, which fits me well, also
my ambitions in programming music, DSP, ...
Will still need some soundfood for the MWI, but without the Programmer...
Especially looking for these fat, hard, but still warm psytrance BANG!!s.
Someone told me a Microwave I was standard in this music some years ago.
Will try the Freeware Editor.
Sounds to give away, anyone?

I used to own a Microwave1, then Microwave2 (not XT, dang! I bought it 2 weeks before the xt release ). Now I am waldorf-less except for a Waldrof PPG v2 Vsti.
I always wanted/still want to get an Orange beast.

I've got an XT which I love, it's got a very distintive sound
I'm thinking about getting a MW 1, mainly to replace the XT for live use so I can get more stuff in my rack.
Does anyone have both?
Are they patch compatible? _________________ Jez

As you know I used to have one of each. I like the sound of the xt/2 better simply because of more filter types and the self oscillation is not as
thin (at high res settings) as the MicroWave1.
I found the 2 to be better all around (bass, pads, drums), while the 1 was excellent mainly at pads and swrily things.
As far as I know the patches are NOT compatible unless someone did a converter.
Thus I wish to own an xt some day

There was a comparison of the analog filters in the MWI and the digital ones in the II in the german keys magazin
(on their CD), as they (waldorf) claimed to have now the same quality in digital domain by their great efforts.
Well, for my ears there was no comparison at all. Lightyears in between!
The analog makes me feel warm and good, the digital not touching me
at all. That´s why a never cared much for the II/XT/Q.
Yet I found the Q+ quite convincing. Maybe best of both worlds.
Maybe it´s just music socialization with Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream,
Jean Michelle Jarre, ...
And now I have a G2, which I like. Yeah, it´s possible. But it does need extra work.
All the best,

I find that I don't really use the filter for sound shaping that much on the XT, not because I don't like it, but because I use the XT mostly for sounds using wavetable modulation.
I rarely want it to sound analog as it's much better at being digital _________________ Jez

waldorfs |
|

hey guys i own 3 waldorfs and i wouldnt swap them for any synth certainly not a nord or a virus i own a mw1 a Q and an xt the Q is a powerhouse and it has possibilities that go far beyond other synths the xt creates awesome sounds if u know how to work a wavetable synth but 1 thing i can tell you is that the microwave xt and the micrwave 2 can only dream about making sounds that come out of the mw1
if you have never heard a waldorf synth i suggest u do but only if u understand expressive sounds if not then just buy a random synth if u just wanna say you own a synth or buy a virus or something like that
cheers |

Yes ! Certainly !
I owned a MW1 2 years long, and it'awesome ! not sounding like a XT or something else ! Very very powerfull "synthesisly speaking", and so warm for a digital synth !
I sold it 2 years ago, due to money needs, but it is the only synth I regret I sold it !!
Definitely worth having it !! |
