It really does look exactly like an MS-20, except that it's smaller.

If this one really sounds like the original, then I guess I have to buy it. This one is a DAW plugin and not a standalone app? I really like those NI standalones. They come BOTH as standalones and as plugins.

Greg, you have the real one, right?

Yes, I have a real MS-20.

To be honest, this emulator thing doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
There is some nostalgic appeal, but if you're going to the trouble of designing and building a new hardware, why not one that can do much more?

BTW for people that want the classic MS-20 sounds, I recommend the Frostwave Resonator.

I would be a great deal more interested in these things were they actual re-issues, perhaps with a couple of refinements. I'm not that keen on the principle of synthsploitation.

Surely the patch bay section is redundant?

It would be much easier in the software to offer any-to-any patching.
And more operators, another LFO etc.

I want a PC built into the chassis of a synth, with a VGA out. Like a laptop-type thing to run softsynths. That is the sort of direction I would enjoy investing in. A little strange and silly, maybe, but that would make for some cool options.

I agree, I think that's where we are going to end up eventually.
The main form factor is the control surface, which defines the true instrument. The computer part is just a small thing that fits inside.
It will be nice if that part is open and can run many different software engines.

They're all computers anyway, just highly specialized lowest-bidding-contractor-based computers running proprietary software. It would not be difficult at all to adopt a laptop-like philosophy (if not outright jacking the ideas component for component) and consititute a midi controller, a pc (upgradable even), an LCD, and some sweetbread I/O into a compact and portable product. It's basicly just dividing up many of the tools we already use extensively and rearranging them. I would LOVE to replace my synthbox with a "keyboard" that serves all of the same functions, with the added bennefit of being able to unhook the monitor and crap, and taking it out live, all the same sounds, all the same synths, all my patches and sample libraries and everything. I could even check my email on stage, and post messages on the forum here between numbers.

Let's start a company to develop and produce a line of such devices. What do ya say? Mosc? Wink

Does one have to use the mini ms20 controller? Is it basically a giant dongle? or can you use the software with a standard controller?

I don't think you must have the ms20 controller. You can just use the software. I wonder if the software adds features that are not in the original.

Mini ms 20 controller? Did I miss that part?

Where?

I have in fact been borrowing various MS devices from friends recently, just in order to be able to record the parts written for the MS thingies. I love the MS 20. It is easy to use and very versatile. I would have preferred an inexpensive reissue.

WOW!

Quote:
The Legacy Collection is expected to have a street price of around $499 USD and should be released in March 2004!

The MS-20 in particular sounds incredible and the mini MS-20 USB controller is just about the coolest thing ever, when you use the patch cords on the controller it actually repatches the MS-20 on your screen!

But... I wonder how much CPU juice this thing needs.

Future Music has a review of this one in the latest issue. UK price is 399 pounds. The review is good. I am not sure I will trust the review, but this seems like promising product. The only thing of interest here for me is getting an MS 20 which runs on a mac and also the MS 20 interface. Quite probably a clavia modular classic is a better deal anyway.. ?
