I think you might be surprised to find that most have a substantial knowledge of music theory. |
I'm not surprised at all. I just never thought to ask the question. _________________ _________________

Sounds interesting! This can't be found anywhere online, by any chance?
(Or for sale in Europe, for that matter.) |

I will check. Perhaps I will ask Eduardo himself.
Anyways, I think Bachus might have read the text too. I wonder what he thinks about it? _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Quote: | Abstract:
Many musicians (whether composers, performers, or writers) see rhythm as the most fundamental and indispensable element of music. But paradoxically, the general recognition of the paramount importance of the durational parameters of music (rhythm and metre), ended up working against them: the 'naturalness' of rhythm and metre made theorists feel too confident that their own aesthetic preferences reflected the essence of these parameters. The result is the subordinate position attributed to rhythm and metre by traditional music theory, which seeks to understand them in relation to pitch structure. This thesis instead proposes a purely durational approach which assesses the operation and qualities (mainly salience and kinesis) of rhythm and metre, and their interaction with other music parameters. The proposed model is supported by a series of experiments and illustrated in three analytical case studies.

When I saw this request I googled for Ivor Darreg. I guess you all already know of his texts like: The Coming Electronic Orchestra- Ivor Darreg

Theory or Theatre Subject description: Sum thoughts |
|
|
Hi--I'm looking forward to meeting everyone in Philly...
Music theory...vs...computer documentation.
I like it best when I'm done reading and I have a new tool. I like it least when it expresses something that's already been used up. Not by me, but by whoever wrote it.
Same with philosophy. Or the news for that matter. Some unfinished chunk'o'stuff that I can play with in my sandbox. "Need input". Exactly. But not necessarily predigested.
Although a good perception can save us all time...
Different thought:
Perhaps at the symposium (which will be short), folks can bring short recorded examples (or produce them live for that matter) that illustrate concepts. Help keep the theory:concrete ratio chewable. If someone is going on too long...someone can call for an illustration. Or if someone's illustration goes on so long the concept is being lost...call for an explanation. Manage the presentation by managing the talk:music ratio.
After all, it's all about time... _________________ Robert Edgar

Robert,
I've been thinking about how to handle exactly that problem--how to have musical examples in the balance with the talk, and still do it all in an hour. The examples would have to be really short, which isn't easy to do with electronic music. I'm coming to the conclusion that we should just talk and see where it goes. We're going to have a full panel of people with very interesting ideas, and we'll be surrounded by music all weekend.
But then again, talking about music is like dancing about architecture ...

It's going to be short, and fairly informal, so I agree. I was just writing out loud, as I am want to do on occasion...
If somebody wanted to show up equipped with a point to make and music to illustrate, s/he could just pre-load short clips on an iPod, and dial up and play whichever clip was to the point. We could have a line in mini jack or something.
Or we can just talk. Either works for me.
