Hi Peeps,

I'm a new member from the UK. I've been making some tunes for a few months and this is my latest track. It's a dance thing, I'm not sure what category it would fall into lol. Your feedback would be apprectiated.

Welcome Bodythief!

If you're a newbie to this music-making malarkey I must say this seems a promising start. I love the moody strings in this. It has a very serious, deep feel. I also really like the ripply piano at around 1.30. Overall I would say this was a pretty good track.

I'm not so fond of the drums which to my ears sound a little clumsy. Maybe it's just me - I do prefer a smoother sounding drum part and the rhythm sounds just a little stilted. Don't know what equipment/software you are using but you might try using drum samples cut from the same loop - this tends to guarantee they will work together well.

Anyway, just my thoughts. I hope you keep at it!

Cheers

Dovder

Thanks for your feedback. I think your completely right about the beat. I used FL studio to make the whole track and programed the drums myself (which I'm not that good at lol) I don't really want to use pre-made loops as I consider that cheating Wink

Glad you liked the strings though, I'll post my previous track soon which is even more moody Shocked

I think this is good. Moody and dubby, with some nice trippy sounds too. I even like the drums! Very Happy

Spectro is almost electro. Ever heard of the band Telex?

I'm also a FL user. It's interesting we have the same style of arrangement. Perhaps it's because of Fruity Loops.....hmmm...

Also, don't completely dismiss "pre-made" drum loops. I get all mine from old vinyl samples at: http://www.phatdrumloops.com/old_site/. I'll chop them up in Recycle, export it to a Soundfont, then build a beat but put some bitcrusher effects and mess with the Gate (like on the mda Dynamics plug-in). That or some sort of randomizer/granulator plug-in. I don't know how much you're into acoustic drums versus synth drums, but using the vinyl loops from old funk albums is great for getting the grooves right as opposed to trying to create them by offsetting the hits to get that "in the pocket" groove.

I'll check out the Telex band and that drum loop site. Drum loops are ok I guess if your going to chop them up etc.

I've never actually used Fruity Loops as it was, FL studio is the first version I've used. I haven't used any other software yet either, I need to learn how to use this one fully first lol

Funny- my dad got me Fruity Loops 3.5 several years ago for my birthday, and so when I registered it for updates, I was able to upgrade to FL Studio (with a few features disabled), but I didn't like it. I guess it was too much for what I do, not that Fruity Loops is known as the most powerful program. The only reason I keep it around is because of the VSTi option - where you can open up Cubase or some other program and use FL Studio as a VSTi.

Enjoy Telex. They're like Kraftwerk but with a sort of 80s sound that many people find laughable. I like them ironically. Smile

This sounds like it's from some kind of old console game or something!

Very uplifting! Very Happy
