so i am very very new to max/msp and am making my way through the tutorials.

so heres my stupid question... exactly what does sig~ do?

ive read the description about how it converts and int to a signal, but i dont understand how this come in handy? ive been testing it by connecting a number directly to a cycle~ object and get the same results without a sig~ in between.

sorry to ask such a dumb question but this stuffs got me really confuuuused!

I understand your frustration going thru the tutorials.
try this small patch I did trying to understand sig˜.
you have to start metro, turn audio on and insert reasonable values on the inlets of "drunk" and see/hear what happens then let me know Very Happy
Editor's note: I wasn't able to upload the max/msp patch because the extension is not allowed Crying or Very sad see below, max patches do not have an extension, as far as I can see Rolling Eyes

first of all, thank you very much for taking the time to create that patch!

hmm... i think i understand this better now. the sig~ is used to display the the signal in int form in that msp number box.

does it affect the sound in any way? when i play the patch and then compare it to the sound it generates without sig~ it sounds exactly the same.

thanks again!

oh and another stupid question... how do you make your msp objects turn yellow? i must have missed that in the tutorial because mine never turn yellow.

yes, i the patch chords that come out of msp objects turn yellow and black, but for instance, in your picture, the sig~ has a yellow border and when i made it for myself, the sig~ was grey and black like a max object.

What I make of sig~ is that it is a bridge between Max and MSP. It coverts Max numbers which happen only on demand (bang) to MSP signals which are continous like audio SIGnals. Hence the sig~ name. Oh yeah also just in case you don't know any patchs with the ~ symbol means they are msp patchs. Hope that helps.
