Here is a pic of my Soundlab.
It's almost finished, just need to drop in some MPF102s and connect the batteries. The clear panel will eventually be lit by LED's hidden behind the aluminium strip. Then I'll engrave the labeling which should make it all light up. The box I made from an old wardrobe drawer, the panel was cut from an old turntable cover. Found both at the recycling shop for $3!! I haven't finished painting the inside black yet. That should make all the wiring stand out. And yes that's a stripboard version of the Soundlab board which I'll be sending details of to Ray once I know it works.
The Krunkus is a happy man. Very Happy

It's ALIVE!! Very Happy
I powered up for the first time tonight and it seems everything runs fine first try!!
One of my switches is wired backwards and there's the LFO -> Noise bleed through, but apart from that we have lift off.
I'll send the stripboard layout to Ray ASAP so you can check it out.

Here's proof that I'm finally finishing the SoundLab!!
The original SoundLab is the section in the middle.
On the left are the controls for the new board; two extra VCOs and a S&H section. On the right you can see where I've begun expanding the mixer for the extra VCOs. At the back left is where the new board is going in. Below the expanded mixer I plan on patching out a few selected connections. Anyone got any suggestions?
Of course the finishing touch will be to engrave the perspex with labeling and re-do the LEDs which light it up. I'm not doing anything else until this is done. I need closure!! Rolling Eyes Smile

That looks really complicated lol (sorry i'm a newb i know!).
I would love a strip board diagram and a parts list of what you used - that would give me a flying start...

all i would have to do was solder hmm.... sounds promising

Go here for the layout,
http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-9521.html
keep in mind that the biggest job is designing, laying out and wiring the enclosure and front panel. I'd start that first if I were you.
If you're really new to DIY electronics, I'd seriously consider getting a PCB from Ray's site: -
http://www.musicfromouterspace.com/analogsynth/SOUNDLABMINISYNTH/soundlab.html
They are heaps harder to get wrong!! Smile

That's beautiful Unkle-k!

Are you gonna light it up from within? That perspex front panel looks so nice too. You can get really nice UV led's these days.

Any chance of a view of the front too?

Hi Tom,
Yeah I'm going to embed the LEDs in the perpex. I used to be able to get those UV LEDs really cheap when I was at Jaycar, but now I can't afford them. I've a stock of blue ones which I'm gonna use instead.
I'll hold off on the front panel shot until it's all lit up. That might motivate me to finish it sooner.

Nice work Uncle K! A true inspiration in budget synth building... I may one day have to follow in your footsteps and build a second Soundlab -- this time using stripboard! Considering that you have already come up with a working layout, it shouldn't be too difficult. As you say, its the panel wiring that's trickiest.

Hey Vort,
Yeah, I've already got a version 2.0 of that layout with a S&H in the top left corner. Or you could add the board I'm building now which is just the two extra VCOs and a more elaborate S&H.
I love designing stripboard layouts. Partly because it's cheap, but mostly for the challenge of it. If you ever want a good DIY project laid out for stripboard, and you think that others might want to build it too, just point me at the schem.

Thanks Uncle, I'd definately be interested in your extra board with the 2 VCOs and S&H. Have you already posted a version of this?

I'm about to embark on a long term modular project and I'm sure there will be plenty of stripboard based modules. So your offer of help is much appreciated. When I have time, I'll start experimenting with module designs and will let you know if I come up with anything worth stripboard-ing.

There will certainly be room in my modular for a couple of Soundlab VCOs. Plus I'm a big S&H fan (as I'm sure many people here are!).

Here's the new board. Starting to come together, sockets and links done, time for the fun part! Smile
In the background you can see my latest discovery. They are 'pin sockets' similar to ones which Mosc identified on another thread recently, I think it was the Yamaha bender's. I found them in Dick Smith's the other day and immediately decided that if I patch out anything I'm gonna do it with these. They are nice and small (patching is not something I'm really into so I don't want it to take up much front panel 'real estate') The patch leads can be easily made up with 2mm nickel plated busbar. I plan to incorporate a 'piggy back' socket into one end of each cord. Anyone got any ideas?

Your Patch sockets should work well, Uncle. I'm going to add some sockets to mine soon, but they'll be minijacks which I happen to have around (they'll also be compatible with another synth I have). I'm going to put them on the back of my case away from the front panel -- I agree, its nice to keep the front panel clean, but the flexibility and fun that patch points allow is well worth while, 'specially when you start mating different synths and machines together. Hope to post a photo when done.

Latest shot of the inside!
Board complete and wired in.
And guess what? Worked first time!!!! Cool Very Happy
There's also a sample of it. No effects, 4 VCOs with a touch of FM modulation 1->2 & 3->4. No sync. PWM from the LFO. S&H -> VCF, 3/4 res.
It looks pretty messy inside at the moment. But now that I know it works, that's about to change. I'll keep you posted as we approach the finale!

PS This is like the 8th major bit of circuitry I've built in a row which has worked first try. I'm starting to wonder whether I'm getting low on my electronic project karma account balance. Surely there must be some smoking chips on the horizon!! How exciting!! Bring 'em on Twisted Evil

Uncle K,

Looking (and sounding) very good, indeed!

When, oh when, am I going to build my Soundlab?

Cheerios,

You must be cheating and do some checking while you build ...

It doesn't look like a mess to me, it looks good, it's just a lot of wires. When you tie 'm up a bit it will look like less wires - but you might have more crosstalk then, things have a price Very Happy

I always check while I build. That's not cheating, that's just part of trying to get things done. Laughing
Hmmmm,... Crosstalk. I don't think crosstalk is such a bad thing. If I wanted no crosstalk I'd sell my soldering iron and go buy a G2! Laughing It's like when I was reading Ray's description of the noise generator for the SoundLab, he says you should cut off the collector from the noise transistor: -
Quote:
the collector acts like an antenna and unless you WANT radio signals in your white noise

First thing I thought was, "of course I want radio signals in my white noise!"
