(apparently they are not too keen on screen shots over there)

Nice new toy for anyone who utilizes sampling/samplers. Emu has succeeded it's revered Emulator line of hardware samplers with the Emulator X, a hardware/software combo that is clearly meant to challenge Gigastudio and Halion, but perhaps not directly. The software (which appears to be quite nice) relies on the presence of the accompanying hardware interfaces which, themselves, seem quite nice. The lower end package sells for $299, and is, unfortunately, PC-only. Which brings me to an interesting excerpt from a review of this gear that I thought my friends here would find amusing.

"What may limit the appeal of the Emulator X is that it is currently only available for PC. No firm plans for a Mac version are in the works, although it is being considered, according to the rep I spoke with. Creative Labs is a PC oriented consumer company, but hopefully they will realize that many professionals in the music business (including EMU sampler customers) are Mac users. Here's hoping for a Mac version! "

I don't know whether to chalk that up as ignorant, or merely a sign of the times.

Yes, this is very amusing!

This is a joint Emu/Creative product. I do not think Creative is much into the mac anyway.

Cyx,

Please edit your message to have a link to the originating site. Also, if you can dress up the post with a picture, that would be nice.

I appreciate the posts very much, but want to make sure everytbing has an external link when appropriate. Thanks...

Here's the Emu site on it:

It looks great. I wish they had a firewire/usb version for a laptop. I would like to have something like that to perform with.

I suspect such solutions will show up within a year or so from several vendors. If you take a look at what is inside older standalone samplers, and which DSPs and components a modern firewire based device should have, all this can be solved at less than 500 USD . The specs will be good.

The computer can be used for the actual software application and sample storage, but the actual audio interface/midi/processing/ram wil be in the external device. I suspect vendors will go for mLAN/firewire.

This is more than a rumour. It seems that several vendors are ordering parts and showing protoypes. Give this a year... The next NAMM?

Parts are inexpensive. Software samplers have shown their strengths. The expensive bit here is a hardware GUI. Doing the GUI in software and keeping the rest in hardware is the most cost effective way. I expect such devices to come with 512 meg ram and be upgradeable to 2 gigs of ram.
