hi
Finally I've a keyboard to circuit bend.My girlfriend give me the permission to circuit bend her Yamaha PSS-280.
RAM chip is AN90B22 18 pins and CPU is XG214BO.I 've just found 14 good bend points....but I would know which pin of RAM chip I should keep away from bending.(I've found datasheet but it doesn't tell me the pins functions)
Do you think the best think to do is bending only points on the CPU?
I would'n t damage the keyboard. |

Hi balance.
glad to hear that you got the permission to bend PSS-280

are you sure its a RAM chip? and can you point to the datasheet, because all i did find that AN90B22 is transistor array!?
are there any other chips than the XG214BO and the AN90B22?
there should be some FM and PCM action going on inside your Yamaha.
can you take a pic of both sides of the PCB? so that we could see the traces and the chips - also a map of the "good bend points" would help.

there is no safe way to bending, its a gamble. but try to stay away from power lines, even 9volts can make a mess.

Dnny
You are right. I'm not sure about AN90B22 .I've found the same datasheet.

when I open it i can see also these three chips:YM7116, MC34072P, AN7148.....but they are far from the CPU. on the contrary AN90B22 is above CPU like in your pic.

as soon as possible.......
thanks dnny.these guides will help me. |

Hey Daniel,
Do you reckon this one's a goer?
I'm going to do a search on the chip at the front of the board. It's a lot bigger than the other ones, maybe it has 16 data lines? I'll let you know what I find out.

yes you can
try to fit a D25 connector somewhere and make a box whit RCA connectors something like this:

Hi Andrew
i think you should give it a try. it has no FM but it's sample based.
Yamaha PSS-31 has the same CPU and ROM.
also the Yamaha PSR-150, PSS-21 and PSS-11 shares the insides of PSR-75
here is Yamaha PSR-75 owners manual
maybe there is some info there.
the ROM should be crystal clocked, but i don't see any crystal so maybe it's integrated _________________ Association of experimental electronics

CL1 right! I'm used to those metal cans
whats the frequency? maybe you could try over clocking and under clocking. _________________ Association of experimental electronics

"8.00T" is written on it, so I assume it's 8Mhz yeah?
I'm gonna do some testing of the interconnections between the chips to see what's going on. I can't find info on either of the chips, except that the XL437 is a 16bit ROM, and that the sounds (wavetable) are generated by the other chip. This could be good, could be bad.
I'm going to force myself back to finishing the SoundLab first though. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

hey balance. have you tried some easter eggs on your Yamaha?
I found this while surfing (The Easter Egg Archive)
Quote: | On early Yamaha PSS keyboards, there is a secret mode that gives sound effects to the voice selection buttons. I know for sure it works on the PSS-80 'cos I had one about 10 years ago, and discovered it myself!
This egg will put sound effects and other wierd noises on your keyboard.
1. Turn off the keyboard.
2. Hold down the LAST two keys at the end of the keyboard.
3. Whilst continuing to hold the keys down,
turn the keyboard on.
4. Enjoy the new sounds! |
there is one for Yamaha GX-76:
Quote: |
With the GX-76 turned off, press C2#, F2, G2# together. Then turn it on. Now move through the secret menu using the +(YES) and -(NO) buttons... |
there must be others also _________________ Association of experimental electronics

Hello
I've found a Yamaha PSS 780 I would buy:do someone know if it can be circuit bent? Or if you have it ,could you be so kind as to tell me what there is inside(CPU & FM)?.Thanks. |

well it's a FM synthesizer , so at least same kind of data line tweak could be done to it as the PSR-6. It has also MIDI! and drumpads
so if you have the money why not - give it a try
some info can be found here :Yamaha PSS 780 at Waranty void _________________ Association of experimental electronics

Any more news about the psr-75? How bendable is it? I have an opportunity to buy one but I'm not sure. |

Quote: | YM2151 is Yamaha's first single chip FM synth, was implemented not only to Yamaha's FM synth keyboards such as DX-21 (1985), DX-27, DX-100 but also to arcade games/home computers. In 1984 Atari acquired legal right to use it as their arcade components. (on the contrary, Yamaha didn't allow Atari to use it for home computers.) Their "Marble Madness" is known as the first video game using YM2151, then Sega, Namco and Konami followed.
YM2164 is almost identical to YM2151. Perhaps the only improvement is multi-timbre MIDI input support. YM2164 first appeared on the SFG-05 (an advanced version of the SFG-01 which added MIDI input) and later used for the FB-01 which was designed as a standalone MIDI module version of the SFG-05. It was also provided to Korg and they used it for the DS-8 (1987) and the 707 (1988). |
i think the "cutting datalines"- kind of bend should work. just find the data lines and follow the instructions ... and let us know how it went

Hi. I just got a yamaha pss-190. Can i do something with it?
Dnny, it seems to have the same cpu that your psr-2
It´s a 40pin saying YM7137 3D and below XI257A0.
No idea what it´s doing. It´s the only chip on the whole board (exept for the audio amp).
Did you find any cool points with yours? On mine some pins seem to be unused. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/lorolocoacousticpop
