LIMBAUGH WARNS OF DANGER TO FREE SPEECH
THU FEB 26 2004 12:28:21 ET

THE NATION'S TOP RADIO HOST RUSH LIMBAUGH WARNED OF GROWING GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION IN BROADCASTING CONTENT.

LIMBAUGH MADE THE COMMENTS AFTER HIS PARENT COMPANY CLEAR CHANNEL DROPPED VIACOM'S HOWARD STERN FROM ITS STATIONS.

'SMUT ON TV GETS PRAISED. SMUT ON TV WINS EMMYS. ON RADIO, THERE SEEMS TO BE DIFFERENT STANDARDS,' LIMBAUGH EXPLAINED.

'I'VE NEVER HEARD HOWARD STERN. BUT WHEN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT GETS INVOLVED IN THIS, I GET A LITTLE FRIGHTENED.

'IF WE ARE GOING TO SIT BY AND LET THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT GET INVOLVED IN THIS, IF THE GOVERNMENT IS GOING TO 'CENSOR' WHAT THEY THINK IS RIGHT AND WRONG... WHAT HAPPENS IF A WHOLE BUNCH OF JOHN KERRYS, OR TERRY MCAULIFFES START RUNNING THIS COUNTRY. AND DECIDE CONSERVATIVE VIEWS ARE LEADING TO VIOLENCE?

'I AM IN THE FREE SPEECH BUSINESS. ITS ONE THING FOR A COMPANY TO DETERMINE IF THEY ARE GOING TO BE PARTY TO IT. ITS ANOTHER THING FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO DO IT.'

Just an acknowledgement I found interesting.

Too bad they didn't fire Howard Stern earlier. Not because he's indecent, but because he's boring and childish. Of course, Rush is even worse. He should be fired too. Can you believe him when he says he has never heard Howard's show? Another thing, Howard got fired by his company, not the government. Once again, Rush, makes a big mistake.

Well, yes, technically Clear Channel made the hit, sure, but who ordered the hit?

"The nation's largest radio station chain took shock jock Howard Stern off the air in six markets, saying his sexually explicit show did not meet the company's newly revised programming standards. The move came on the eve of Thursday's congressional hearing on broadcast indecency."

and

"Clear Channel's moves are the latest examples of broadcasters responding to pressure from federal regulators and lawmakers who say too much of radio and TV programming has become unsuitable for children.

Executives from ABC, Fox, NBC, Pax and Clear Channel Communications were scheduled to testify Thursday before the House Energy and Commerce telecommunications subcommittee. The committee has recommended increasing the maximum fine for indecency from $27,500 to $275,000."

So this is clearly more than a company simply enforcing it's indecency standards.

Well, the proposed fine itself is an indecency and clearly defines the course broadcasting will take.

It's nothing more than a passive embargo, basicly. Whether it's Cuba or Clear Channel, the treatment is fundamentally the same. Do our will, or we will starve you to death or into compliance. That's their longstanding modus operandi.

Notice how Rush twists things to get at the other side. Here it is the right wing that is doing this "censorship", yet his fear is that John Kerry would act the same way as the conservatives if given a chance. He implies that liberals would have irrational views about conservatives. He can't take a stand on free speech without making a personal slur on his political opponents.

Yes, you're exactly right. He makes a valid point, but his example is biased. That's par for the coarse. It wasnt part of my point, I left it in to be thorough and not take his relevant comments out of context. Wink

I often listen to Rush when riding in my car. He often makes logical points while at the same time distorting the discussion to slander so-called liberals with innuendo and false conclusions.

He has an agenda and he is an active participant in The Game, so objectivity is a red herring. Once you understand that, it's easier to distill the merit involved and dispense with the spin.
