Ondes Martenot sound |
|
|
Ondes Martenot has its unique controls and those speakers, which makes its sound somewhat magical. I wonder, if there is some magic in its raw sound/waveforms too? Do you have any info or care to guess? I have only seen heterodyning high frequency oscillators a la the original Theremin mentioned.
Here are best isolated sounds I have found. Also some playing techniques are demonstrated. Lots of short lo-fi .mov files. Pay attention to those low register examples:

I'll have to look into it some, but in my experience, the hetrodyning process seldom produces a pure sine wave. I'm not sure why this is. It may be because hetrodyning, like a ring modulator, produces non-harmonic partials that have the effect of "magnifying" the slightest deviations from the pure sine wave shape in the inputs. |

Here is some heterodyning info regarding Theremin:
http://www.paia.com/thereton.htm
"Since the only periodicity is at the difference frequency, all harmonics will be multiples of the difference frequency."
Different waveforms Ondes Martenot is capable are not explained. I wonder, how they look in oscilloscope.

I found these from Yahoo Analogue Systems forum: A block diagram and some waveforms scanned from an Ondes Martenot study book written by Ms. Loriod. Digital versions of the presented waveforms don't sound particularly magical. Spectrum for waveform "N" seems wrong.
