Subject description: about ascertaing what software is installed on Windows XP
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

Is there any way of getting a full list of all installed software from a windows XP box? I mean like scanning %PROGRAMFILES%, but also getting things that aren't installed in the default location? (How for example does Windows generate the list of executable that it suggest for opening unknown files?)

Any help gratefully received!

Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. That will list all software that is "registered" in the windows registry and that are allowed to be added or removed by the user. This involves where the program is installed, not whether it's default location or customized by user. As long as it's in the registry, it should be here.

Second place is by inserting the windows disk after boot, you can modify some of the components of windows that are installed (extra languages, accessibility options, etc).

Third, is to look through C:\Windows, ...\system, ...\system32 (and usually any other sub directory of \Windows) for basic components of windows such as the registery editor (regedit.exe), and many command line tools such as ping, ipconfig, traceroute, and the like that don't really exist in a listing or documentation unless you know what to look for in the first place.

You might also check Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment Variable to find your path, and see where windows default searches for executables.

Thanks for the response: we were trying to ascertain if a person had actually uninstalled software by telephone ... the add/remove programs trick helped.

What I was thinking was that there is probably some way of dumping all exe-files registered in the registry to a text file, but I have no idea how this would be done.

Thanks again!

Download a copy of Belarc system advisor. It will do a complete scan and tell you virtually everything about the unit, hardware and software. It's fast and simple. Generating it's report is the only thing it does.
