So, I was looking at my setup the other day my UC33 looked so depressed sitting there.

It's hardly the crazy circuitbending and building of micro's into household objects that I often read about here but I thought I'd give it a bit of an overhaul.

This version was printed on photopaper and chopped up. If anyone can suggest a decent way of cutting the holes out I'd appreciate it as I tried a variety of methods (believe it or not, I even attempted to use a sewing machine to punch a circle of holes) and most of them end up ugly and awkward - you can see how nasty from some of the detail pics below.

I have another version in the works using a transparency but again the issue with the holes is a bit of a drawback.

If anyone wants to do their own, I'm happy to send around the illustrator file.

Don't know the english name for it, "holpijp" in dutch.

Here is the number pad overlay printed out onto an overhead transparency and then the reverse got sprayed with a few coats of white paint. The red isn't quite an exact match or anything but I think it's an improvement.

I've done the main part again using the same method but I've not had the chance to get to a craft shop yet to look for a holpijp yet though.

It looks like you cut the holes to match the outside diameter of the knobs. Can you take the knobs off, thus cutting a smaller hole for the shaft of the encoders, then slide the knobs back on?

The knobs are of the fairly cheap midi controller school of not appearing to be able to come off without snappingor at least, when you give them a decent pull, it feels like they might be glued or something.

If only they did, it'd make the whole thing a million times easier.

I don't really want to perform any surgery on it as I'm bound to break it all for a completely visual means.

I guess I'm just trying to console myself for not having a Lemur.

Yet? (in my dreams anyway, you've got to have hope)

It looks like a "hole punch", the type that needs to be hammered

I have considered making copies of those overlays that came with the UC33. I have access to a Roland Cammjet plotter. This one can print as well as cut stuff like this. I reckon I could possibly laminate the overlays before or afterwards or something. I think scanning the old overlays and then making a 1:1 Adobe llustrator file of the layout is smart. The Cammjet uses a special colour that has to be set to the paths to be cut. It does squares and holes pretty well. That being said, any decent printshop with a Cammjet ( or similar device ) can do this. Main point is that the file is set up correctly.

the pics got lost I think in the big server crash we had in august. Erstlaub is not a very frequent visitor here, so this might take some patience Rolling Eyes

This is a scan of one of the overlays that comes with the UC33.

In theory the file is a 1:1 scan of the overlay. 300DPI.

I do generally drop by most days as I have this forum fed into my google homepage <3 but tend to keep myself to myself.

I'll need to dig out the stuff relating to this project from another HD so bear with me, i'll see what i can do. If i remember correctly, trying to get my hp printer to output at the actual size was a nightmare as they seem to hae inbuilt unchangable margins.

Watch this space.

I've not, sorry, I just have crazy amounts of college work and regular work on atm plus am generally losing the battle with SAD, but this is on one of my to do lists.

Just now, the very thought of turning on my pc is more than I can handle - thank heavens for macbooks is all I'll say.

Be cool, I'll sort you out asap.
