hey

i just picked up one of those new Korg nanoKontrol USB controllers. The controller is set up with midi cc#'s for all the knobs sliders and buttons right out of the box.

Can i control my nord modular G2 patches with this usb controller? it is only USB, there are no other in/out lets (no midi cable connectors).

Thanks

You will have to get a USB to Midi connector to run from your computer to the Nord Modular. There is currently no other way to do it. The Nord Modular cannot run midi from the computer to the Nord with the usb cord connected. Weird but true...

A USB to MIDI connector won't work either. The USB end of those needs to be connected to a computer.

If it's only USB then it needs to be connected to a computer. You cannot control the nord modular with a USB controller by itself. The USB port on the Nord only works hooked up to a computer as it was designed to just work with the editor.

i have the USB controller pluged into my computer and the midi CC #'s are being received by my computer from the USB controller.

i want to control the NMG2 software, not the nord.

when i right click on one of the assignable; for example: volume rotary knobs, in the software and click on "assign..." then choose midi controller (i don't have the software here so ill edit this message when i do have the software available for specific wording of these options) and choose the CC# that i wish to use in conjunction with the midi CC# from the rotary on my USB connected controller... it does not work

Am I missing a step?

thanks

ben

Yes, you can't automate the editor .. you're automating the synth that way.

If by NMG2 software you mean the editor, then there is no way to control that from you MIDI controller. However, all of the knobs and modules you see in the editor are actually running on the Nord - the editor just shows you a representation of the current values (as set in the hardware). So if you want to control the G2 in any way whatsoever, you need a MIDI interface that you can connect to the MIDI in port on the G2.

/Stefan

ahh, i see what your saying.

I have an M-audio, audio interface. I have have a midi cable running from the M-auido's midi out, to the NMG2's midi in, then another midi cable running from the NMG2's midi out to the M-audio's midi In; and again... i also have the controller i want to control the nord with, plugged into my computer (as its usb only). Also note that the M-audio interface is plugged into my computer via usb as well.

I guess i still have two questions.

1. Does this sound like the correct set up if i want to control the nord with this usb controller; and

2. If so, how would i design the NMG2 patch to make this work?

Thanks a lot for your help guys... these questions seem pretty involved

ben

You will need some software to pass the midi controller cc's to your computers midi out port.

I think you can do it with the free Hubi midi loop back application, but I haven't used that in years.

Your DAW may also have a 'soft through' setting somewhere.

This could work, yes ... depending on how the controller works ...

When it is seen by software as a MIDI in port you'd have to route the data from that MIDI in port to the M-Audio thingie's MIDI out port which would then send it to the G2. But you'd need some software for that, not sure what would work here .. maybe midi-ox? or maybe your controller came with some MIDI routing software?

Concerning the G2 setup I think you're already doing that the right way re. assigning controllers to patch parameters / module knobs. Additionally the MIDI channels would have to be set correctly. On one port and over one cable there are 16 available channels and the receiver and transmitter have to agree upon the channel number.

The G2 can be configured through the synth menu / synth settings, each slot can have it's own associated MIDI channel (don't worry about the global channel for now). The rest would depend on what software you end up using and what channel your controller is set to.

For a midirouter you can also have a look at Miditrix (midimatrix)
