Hi there, thought some people here might be interested in my London Sound Survey website, which has Creative Commons field recordings. It's really to depict all sorts of different auditory aspects to living in London.

Some of the recordings are organised into categories reflecting their purpose, such as London market traders' cries, buskers, street preachers and lots more.

There are also clickable sound maps and a history of London sounds consisting of written accounts going back to the 11th century AD.

It's a non-commercial website, done for posterity not prosperity! Have a look and a listen, hope you like it.

Ian

Wow!!

Fantastic site - great quality recordings and easy to navigate. The content is very interesting too. I will very likely use some recordings from there - and let you know if I do so. Smile

Welcome, Ian. Smile

The recordist Stuart Fisher did well getting so close to the fox clubs playing in the cemetery.

My own fox recording needed little skill, as the adult foxes are very bold where I live . . . they don't even run away from people. They just look you up and down, then walk away at a leisurely pace, like they're not that bothered.

Also I should say that the sound recording for my area is spot on, which makes sense... Right down to the jets doing the Heathrow west standard approach (fly east over GG/finchley) and the local birds (mostly magpies and crows, you don't hear the grackles and the tits in a recording as much). Anyway, an interesting project.

My favourite vignette so far is in the Camden night where some woman says "I'm just gonna go and kick im in the balls"... Too choice.

London can be a harsh and indifferent place to many . . . the Big Issue seller recorded cannot be much older than about 35, but his voice already has a slight quaver in it.

Edison Rex: heaves sigh of relief that the recording for your locale didn't sound completely wrong. Crow and magpie numbers really seem to have increased a lot in London in the last few decades. Was slightly surprised to hear a magpie croaking and chattering in a side street in the City this morning.
