A very interesting substitution cipher. The use of unaccented letters of the full Roman alphabet to represent spaces (while not using spaces in the ciphered text) was a clever way to complicate the cipher.
I wonder if there were ever a cipher key document, or did the secret society members have to memorize the cipher to be able to read and write the ciphered text. They may have had to learn it to make it more practical to read and write, and to make the cipher much more secure. _________________ varice |

In German: “ameN .”, English: “Amen.”
The full decipher to German text of the document along with an English translation and other information can be found here:

The answer appears to be revealed within the document. In the third section: Secret lesson for the *nee* (Master), Acceptance of the *nee* (Master) (ref. page 15 and 16), the candidate (for Master status) has to show his skill in reading and writing of “our cipher”. That wouldn’t be much of a test if not done from memory. A quick search of the English translation of the document does not indicate that the cipher has a written key.

Indeed
I wasn’t aware of the Copiale cipher book until now. But, from what I have learned so far, I am amazed. My interest in ciphers and cryptography is due to my first official job – serving my country as a member of the US Air Force, holding the post of secure communications equipment specialist with a Top Security clearance.
You really have to give credit to the person or group that devised this particular substitution cipher, apparently done in the 1700’s. It was made just simple enough for some select secret society members to learn it, but just complex enough that it could not be easily cracked by outsiders – even up until now as it was finally deciphered in 2011. That required the combined efforts of experts in information sciences and linguistics, along with the help of a fast computer running software algorithms… Wow That’s very impressive work. _________________ varice |
