Tromsø |
 |
|
I have had a slumbering fascination about the fact that there is a relatively large town north of my country called Tromsø (in Norway), and I've also read about a couple of electronic artists who live and work there, inspired by the environment.
It seems I'm getting a couple of extra weeks' vacation this summer, and I'm toying with idea of driving up there, stay maybe half a week and then go back. Since there are a few active norwegians here, I'm wondering if you might share some insight into the place - is it worth visiting, if so, what could be fun checking out, playes where you can stay etc. I'm not the sporty kind so I won't be constantly hiking, but I might want to check out some sights - maybe take the iPad along, get inspired and make some music.
I realise that Tromsø is pretty far away even if you live in, say, Trondheim. It would be interesting anyway just to know what the general norwegian person's view of Tromsø is - maybe it's nothing special amongst all the breathtaking nature and other stuff you have? And of course if a non-norwegian has ever been to the place that would be awesome.

I haven't been to Tromsø since I was a kid. I visited family up there back then. Loved the nature - it sure is pretty. Nowadays my interests would probably also include Mack beer and the Northern lights
I guess you've been browsing the info-sites that appear when you google Tromsø(?) If you go soon you can catch Bukta - Tromsø Open Air Festival.
Sorry not much hard info there But hey, why not just go? Even the drive itself will be nice (well, I enjoy that sort of thing). Will be going north sometime again myself, with a tent and fishing rod, just because it's bloody nice and good fishing up there.
Me, I'm looking into the Norbergfestival, a lot closer to where you live...

^ Yes, he (Geir Jenssen) is. So is Röyksopp and Bel Canto. They even have the Insomnia Festival of electronic music there. Is it something in the water?
Edit: more on Trømsø and electronic music here.

Thanks for the responses and links!
Yeah I love to drive and listen to CDs and meditate. If I go I will probably go whether I had anything specific to look at or not (I haven't googled that much yet), but it would be cool if someone knew something.
That festival looks cool, nice lineup (again, for some reason I find it amazing that such a thing happens that far up - probably because the adjacent parts of Sweden are mostly uninhabited). I think it's a bit early for me unfortunately.
Seems I was right about a bunch of electronic musicians living there!

That is a fair old drive!
I used to work with a guy from Tromsø, he was a nice guy and I like Röyksopp so I'm sure you will have a good time.
Also when you get back to work afterwards you will realise how warm and cheap Copenagen is!

Heh, unfortunately my assignment in Copenhagen has ended (for this time). I'm still up for a beer of you fancy it though - it's a short ride across Öresund.
