How to capture a radio show on a compilation ? Maybe this is impossible, yet luckily people try and we simply get a great compilation thanks to these people. The Compost Radio Show is a show that airs weekly - since 2 years - on around 12 channels. It is a great show, presented by Michael Rütten, that takes the air for two hours each week in which the best freestyle music around is presented. As Compost itself, it knows no boundaries nor rules and all kinds of music get their shot at success in this show. The show also has a weekly DJ set and these have been spun by some of the finest DJs and selectors around : Carl Craig, Richard Dorfmeister, Roni Size, Louie Vega, Trickski and many others. It is all about quality labels and quality music, without sales figures and success. The love for good music dominates the show strongly.
First song on the album, after an intro part, is a track by Danielsongs, made available exclusively for this compilation. Just this track is a reason for buying this CD. Very organic and soulful with a touch of Spanish guitar supported by a beat loop that could have been sampled from a human beat box. Just fantastic lounging or late night house to be served on a plate accompanied by some Herbert, Thievery Corporation and some tracks from the Perlon label. The next track is another soulful ballad with a lot of reggae crooner attitude. Music for lovers ! Then Opensouls is featured with "In Your hands", a track that would fit Guru's Jazzmataz any time : jazzy R&B with hip-hop attitude. It leads to more Latin breaks on Break Reform's "Neptune". Franck Biyong feat Wunmi is the next choice of MR. Rütten : a two-step afro-inspired R&B piece. Al of this leads to very Latin oriented deephouse with jazzy melodies and then again to jazzy atmospheric house with a little twist of acid. I am sure you get the picture by now. The compilation indeed swings from one style into another but never looses that line of suspense created by the fantastic choice of melodies and rhythms. Soul is the story throughout the entire trip, or should I say "The love for music".
If I could choose just three favourites on the entire compilation, I'd opt for the following : Danielsongs with "I could save you, I could Hold You Tonight", Sleep Walker feat. Bémbé Ségué's "Into the Sun" and finally a second exclusive track to this compilation, C S Cook's "Peephole People". Two jazz tracks indeed complete my choice, but especially C S Cook was a true discovery for me personally. I am off to the net to try and find a copy of anything ever done by C S Cook. Thank you Michael Rütten for a great show !
