Cyberdreams? Arrrgh!

They sound pretty OK, but I get sick when I see them.

They should hire some product designers next time. Hopefully someone at Apple will have a talk with these guys.

Pimp Image Editorial

PIMP IMAGE EDITORIAL

"I don't know what you heard about me
But a b---h can't get a dollar out of me
No Cadillac, no perms, you can't see
That I'm a mutha f-----g P-I-M-P"

This is the chorus from rap artist 50 Cent's Billboard Top 10 hit "P.I.M.P." In his music video featuring real life pimps, 50 Cent brags "Whoever said progress was a slow process wasn't talkin' about me. I'm a P-I-M-P". Apparently "progress" means pimpin' is back, bigger and blacker than it was in the Blaxploitation films of the early 70's. In the 90's every rapper was a Gangsta. Now, every rapper is a pimp, dripping in gaudy diamonds, clown suits, half-naked "hos" on each arm, a diamond encrusted chalice in hand, and hanging with real life pimps. Progress in the black community is indeed a slow process, particularly as the most visible and prominent black entertainers work overtime to pander stereotypes in black face for cash.

It is 2003, and black men are on television promoting "ghetto-fabulous" lifestyles in full pimp regalia and flashy custom detailed cars, glorifying procuring women and turning them out for profit. Rapper "Project Pat" spits some of the most degrading vitriol about women I have ever heard in his song "Gorilla Pimp" wherein he raps:

"[n]o money for a mack mean drama for a ho
Paramedics toting you through the trauma center do'
Busted lips broken leg but I got my bank roll
Tried to put a struggle up so she got her eye swoll"

What is so sickening about the return of the black pimp image is that this propaganda is most widely featured in black magazines and on BET, Black Entertainment Television. The Blaxploitation films of the 70's such as "Superfly" and "Dolemite" played a significant role in perpetuating the flamboyant black pimp image. These films, although ultimately self-defeating, arose from the need of the black community to transcend the 60's film stereotypes of black men as docile and subservient and served as a vehicle to get black actors on the screen. The social and historical context during the early 1970's gives some perspective to explain why pimps, drug dealers, and prostitutes played glorified, even heroic roles in the Blaxploitation films. At that time, the black community was so devoid of a voice in film that was even somewhat reflective of real life, that producers like Melvin Van Peebles elevated these anti-heroes into positions of power on film.

Fast forward, thirty years later, the current social climate hardly justifies the promotion of pimpin' as a means to an end. Black men have tremendous power and influence in the multi-billion dollar hip-hop industry. Black men sit at the decision-making tables, run the networks, and own the production companies that choose this method of shameless marketing. It is not the "Hollywood Shuffle" of the past, but rather is now driven by the black dominated hip-hop industry itself. It has truly become a race to the bottom as hip-hop artists try to "out clown" each other in videos, flanked by characters such as the "Clown Prince" himself, pimp Bishop Don "Magic" Juan who boasts that he is "[t]he greatest player who ever played the game."

Pimp appeal is so popular recently that you can hardly find a Top 40 rap song that does not have some reference to pimps. In addition to 50 Cent's hit, P.I.M.P., rapper David Banner has topped the charts with his song "Like a Pimp", and rapper Nelly "keeps hope alive" with his tribute "Pimp Juice". In time for the holiday season, consumers will be able to purchase Nelly's new energy drink "Pimp Juice" and perhaps sip it in a chalice while playing a spirited game of "Ghettopoly." Taiwanese immigrant, David Chang has been embroiled in controversy over his board game that is currently on sale in Urban Outfitters stores. The game features "playas" acting like pimps and game cards reading "You got yo' whole neighborhood addicted to crack. Collect $50." The object of the game is to put crack houses or projects in bad neighborhoods across the country. The game makes a mockery of black society, and is highly offensive, blatant "poverty pimping". Some say Chang's biggest mistake, however, was not being black, and I'm afraid they are absolutely right. If "Ghettopoly" was a Roc-a-Fella product, (Jay Z's company) perhaps we would not be so outraged. We can degrade each other in the black community and run ourselves into the ground by promoting the pimp and ghetto lifestyles, but how dare an "outsider" try to profit from the same image we continue to pander.

It deeply saddens me that with all the alternative images, we still gravitate toward the most destructive. Apparently, some blacks still can't get off the plantation, and lost as to how to be free, are still mentally enslaved, although cloaked in material riches.

That Es1 is one bad mo-fo

I agree looks a bit naff but it sounds great, It has become my main "basic" synth, Its really easy to program and despite its color scheme it is very well laid out, shame the same cant be said for its big brother, which is a bitch.

Oh and leave the EXS24 alone

Agreed, the Steinberg USM is legendary when it comes to showing off great skills in GUI and product design. Very Happy Shocked Cool

There is of course no rule which sez all things audiosoft should be styled in the great tradition of analog hardware and analog interfaces.. on the other hand very few vendors have shown good and completely new innovative designs build from scratch.
