i have one of those at work! Excellent box.. but I am waiting for a G5 TNG. Apple has several updated boxes in the works now. The latest 10.3.3 update contains references in the code to new G5 models. The current 2gighz dual G5 is great, but I suspect we will get increased bus speed and faster CPUs soon.
Seems like I can survive for a while using the dual g4 I just bought. I suddenly got 4-5 times more power than what I ghad using the old G4. Now I can even USE the CS80 virtual instrument I bought. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

I don't think the Nord Lead is a good choice, all of its sounds should be covered by the G2. Go for something with a different character. There are lots of possibilities. Look at your requirements for playing style, performance functions, size, price, etc.
I use an XL-7, which has lots of polyphony for a good price and a nice control surface. |
I just got an XL-7 little more than a week ago. I have to agree this and the rest of the Emu Command Station family deliver an incredible amount of power (128-voice polyphony, up to 32 simultaneous arpeggiators - each on its own MIDI channel, slots for sound expansion ROMs, etc.) for the price.
I got a G2 also, but its sitting in its box while I learn my way around the XL-7 and wait for the Mac OS X editor to come out. Right now one thing the XL-7 can do that the G2 can't is microtuning - I'm going to be focusing on 19-tone/octave scales for the present and the XL-7 has several full-MIDI range microtunings to choose from, including 19-tone. So I'd probably use the G2 for processing and experimental sounds/noises. I've seen some people post microtuned patches for the G2, but they have to do a LOT of extra work that could be avoided if a module was added to the system that could store full-MIDI-range microtunings and convert them to frequency or something like that. I suppose another approach would be to take a look how microtuning is implemented in the Yamaha TX802 and put those features into the upcoming DX emulation modules. |

Welcome to electro-music.com, MusicalGirevik.
From what I've seen of Greg's, EGW, XL-7, I think that is a great choice to compliment the G2. It has some great orchestral sounds it there that really are striking. I know that is not the main draw, but it's a nice bonus. |

Thanks for the welcome, Mosc! I'll post on the Introductions forum when I've got some recordings to give some idea of what I'm into. I'm selling off some stuff to get a MOTU 828MkII to use for recording.
Opinions seem to vary on the Emu orchestral ROMs. To max out my XL-7's internal sound set, I added the World Expedition, Vintage Collection, and Protean Drums ROMS. I got the World primarily for gamelan and other ethnic sounds, the Vintage to round out the synth sounds with its more VCO-ish flavor (the electric piano, clav, Mellotron sounds, organs were pleasant surprises for me), and the P-Drums to with its 24-bit samples to solidify the XL-7's intended role (among several) as the primary drum machine. For less than $500 plus the cost of the extra ROMs (all but the World were on sale at emu.com) I got enough firepower to free up the G2 for realtime sound mangling and whatnot.

G2 Rack... |
|
|
egw wrote: | I don't think you should get the rack engine if you want to perform with it.
The performance controls are really what make the G2 stand apart.
The rack engine doesn't even have a display to tell you what patch is loaded. It is designed to be used in the studio with a computer attached.
Unless you want to use a laptop in performance, but I thought that is what you're trying to avoid. |
Feh...I think MIDI control is adequately flexible, although more work to set up. Then again I am not bothered by the idea of having a laptop on stage
I hope to getting my G2 rack in the next 10 days (so I am biased by my impending reality). Even if I had the money available, I think I'd really hesitate at spending another $1000 for the controller. Of course I want the keyboard version, but I just can't see myself putting a grand on a controller version with no sound engine, as if it were a general purpose product. No doubt I'll be eating my words in a few years' time
It should be noted that the code is not generated in the PC at all. The PC only transmits the module configuration to the G2, all the code blocks are stored in the G2's EPROM. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to change patches via MIDI without a PC attached. |

I also do not think the engine is only for studio use (although mine is still shipping), but performance is very possible. Maybe if 'performance' is strictly interpreted as 'playing a keyboard and turning knobs', this might be somewhat true, but if you think of a bass player re-synthesizing his bass lines, a drummer with some trigger pads and some foot controllers here and there, I imagine the engine to be a fantastic & portable performance tool
