Very interesting idea. Some sort of slot mastering mixer where one can easily set slot levels without having to switch slots could also be a very convenient function. It could even have been dedicated frontpanel knobs on the key versions. But alas, only software solutions are possible now.
I guess this is a nice subject to discuss some further. Where are the best places and what are the best methods to add controls like Jan suggests. Or controls to set levels and/or pans and/or some basic tone controls for all four slots? E.g. what would be nice to have in the toolbar, or e.g. on a separate module in the FX section. Or, like the patchfloater, have some sort of 'common' floater popup window with basic controls for the four slots.
There is one little drawback to Jan's actual suggestion and that is what if more than one output module is used that mixes to the same physical outputs as another output module. E.g. should this automatically add controls to the toolbar? And if so, how to keep those apart? Or are these suggested controls master controls after all output modules have been mixed together? And what gets CC#7? Or preassign CC#7 to output 1/2 and other preassigned CC#s to the other knobs?

PS In the past a few people have together compiled a wishlist for the first Modular and at that time that list has been deeply discussed with Clavia. Virtually all things on that list had been discussed on the NM mailinglist. Basically the outcome was that the old hardware was not powerful enough for many of the suggestions, but there is strong indication that that list was a positive factor in the decision to develop the G2.
One of the main properties of that NM list was that all suggestions had been thoroughly thought about. Issues like feasibility for implementation on the given hardware were examined by some experts on the list before being put on that list. I don't think the actual list ever made it to the public domain, but that is hardly an issue now.
There is some indication that Clavia would appreciate such a project again for the current status of the G2. However this is a difficult and serious thingy, as many people have many wants and needs, but only few people might actually know if it would be possible at all to implement them. And this list should contain only things that can be implemented. In that way such a list becomes a strong argument from the user community and will surely meet positive acceptance by Clavia.
Such a list is only partly about new modules, even more important are the little things that are not yet consequently implemented everywhere, e.g. like unit identifiers on knobs. Example is the percent sign that shows up in only some popups and displays. Or if the exp scale an the dB scale (which are equal in scaling action but have separate unit identifiers) be merged to e.g. only dB scales. And should or shouldn't we have the note names back in the oscillator pitch display. Or things like the possibility to save a selection of modules in a file, to be recalled from disk as a paste selection later. And many more of those sometimes simple things, which when cleaned up would give the G2 a more 'finished' appearance and make the G2 more user friendly.
Basically the main subjects that wishes should be filed under are:
1) known bugs
2) hardware user surface (key models only)
3) editor
4) improvements to existing modules
5) new modules
Don't hesitate to give your opinion! |

The subject seems to shift a bit with the PS, but I like that shift
To briefly come back on the image, I had meant the knobs to be masters. re. the MIDI CC's, I'd have liked those to be more freely configurable. _________________ Jan
also .. could someone please turn down the thermostat a bit.
