Lately I've been thinking of buying a Moog Slim Phatty. It should work very well with the G2, and I suppose it can also be used only as a filter like in your mod.

Yes, the Phatty has external inputs for audio and CV, so it could be used this way. You would have the option of mixing the Phatty’s sound sources with the G2’s before the filter, and the option to use the G2 for CV control (with a G2 DC output modification, of course) or just use the Phatty’s EG and modulation for the filter. Then the audio output of the Phatty could be connected to a G2 input for more processing/FX treatment. It should work like a charm!...

Finally I got a Slim Phatty (my first Moog!) and I must say that I'm really satisfied with the G2 - SP combo and the way how they can interact with each other. Wonderful sound and possibilities!...

Hey Albert – Congratulations for scoring a Moog Slim Phatty to use with your G2! Have you tried patching G2 sound sources to the Phatty audio inputs and the Phatty output back into a G2 input for processing/FX treatment?

Attached to this post is one of my recent patch templates that I have been using with my G2X/moogerfooger filter monster that you may like to try with your G2 and SP. So basically, the raw G2 sound output is patched to the G2 audio output 3 which you would connect to the SP audio input. Then connect the SP audio output to the G2 audio input 3 (the G2 audio outputs 1 and 2 are used for the main stereo output). In this case, you have the option of using the SP or the G2 for the final VCA. The quickest results may be to use my G2 amplitude EG settings and set the SP volume EG to the fastest attack, the max sustain level, and the longest release parameter settings. This patch is based on modifications of the “mono monster VM” patch that I posted earlier along with some detailed patch information over here:

http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-9258.html

But, this patch posted here in this topic has a moogerfooger filter cutoff DC CV output patched to the G2 audio output 4 to be used with my modified G2X, so be sure to disconnect or fade out this audio output connected to any audio mixers. Since you have not modified your G2 for DC CV output, you would need to use the SP filter cutoff EG and modulation instead with this patch. I suggest that you look at the G2 patch parameter settings for filter cutoff, EG, and modulation as a guide to set the SP filter and modulation parameters and that you set the SP filter resonance to about 60%. And be sure to check out all of the patch variations…

Thank you Varice! I'll try the patch tonight, at home.

Yes I connected the G2 and the Phatty one with each other, so I can send audio to the Phatty (out 3) and get it back to the G2 again (in 3). The Phatty has 2 audio outputs (main and headphones), so I can have one output always connected to the G2, and the other to the soundcard.

The Phatty also has a MIDI merge function, so I can connect the G2 directly to it, and then to the computer without using an additional MIDI interface (thumbs up for this feature!!). It also has an USB MIDI port, but this way I can use both synths without having to turn on the computer.

But to me the most exciting thing is that since all the parameters in the Phatty can be edited via CC#, I can expand its capabilities using modules inside the G2 (envelopes, LFOs, sequencers, etc). Moreover, since the Phatty already has an LFO and 2 envelopes, I can use them when I need really fast modulations. The filter envelope can be used to modulate other things as well.

There are many important parameters in the Phatty that can't be edited from the front panel (ie. number of poles in the filter, additional modulations...), but again, since all is also changed via CC# I can create a patch in the G2 to control these parameters with the excellent G2 interface. I hope to experiment a lot this weekend ^_^

I feel very lucky. I got the Phatty from a guy who bought it, and sold it to me just the next day for 160€ less. I couldn't be happier. Smile

Recently the topic of creating better G2 filter building block patches was raised. A picture of Baby’s G2 filter “solution” is posted there (analog Synthesizers.com modules!?):

Cool

So, here is a picture of my G2X and MF-101 moogerfooger LowPass Filter “solution”. Razz

The mystery is what is not on the picture - on the right side I mean, so how it was cut off (for it's purpose of course).

Oh, right, the other bits in the picture!

Just above the G2X is a Roland MC-909 Sampling Groovebox loaded with the max sampling RAM and a SRX-01 Dynamic Drum Kits ROM waveform expansion.

At the top of the picture is the bottom of the left loudspeaker pair, JBL 250Ti, that I use for listening to stereo music and as studio monitors. Mine are finished in Burmese teak.

Yikes, those speakers are purr-fect for Ambiophonic Stereo and you have the setup space to move them closer together. Get the AmbiophonicDSP and if you don't think it's the greatest thing in audio, I'll refund your $10.00. (Offer applies to everyone else too, for that matter).

The AmbiophonicDSP is meant for use with two speakers spaced close together in front of the listener. It's not a good idea to use headphones with it, but we are working on something for headphones to be released later.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I use headphones almost exclusively since I'm only at home at night, and also I live in a small flat. Confused

I tried your G2 version of the Ambiophonic encoder not long after you posted it, but with a smaller set of speakers (as each 250Ti speaker weighs more than 100 lbs which doesn’t allow for easy movement for sonic experiments). The encoded sound was “phasey” (comb filtered) and the frequency spectrum was colored too much. I tried tweaking the G2 parameters and different speaker separation angles, but I never could get a result that sounded better to me than normal stereo. Maybe after listening to HiFi stereo for the last 40 years and these excellent 250Ti speakers for the last 26, I have grown accustomed to the interaural crosstalk and don’t perceive it as a significant problem.

Does the VST work significantly better than your G2 version?

Hey Albert,

Yes, it is nice to have more studio space, although my room is not huge, only about 15 x 23ft, or 5 x 7.67m. But, this is still larger than the small studio rooms in all the apartments where I lived before I retired. And my 250Ti speakers sound much better in a larger space, where I can also crank up the volume without worrying about disturbing my neighbors Razz .

Albert, I hear you brother…

Stereo headphone listening has a problem that is the opposite of normal stereo speaker listening: a total lack of natural interaural(sp?) crosstalk by sounds that are panned hard left or right. While the Ambiophonic encoder attempts to eliminate crosstalk for stereo speaker playback, stereo headphone playback could be enhanced by adding a more natural crosstalk. Years ago in my apartment dwelling days, I patched a headphone enhancement for my G1 micro modular that I think sounded very good. But, trying to patch this in the G2 didn’t seem to work as well. But anyway, I could dust off and polish up my G2 headphone patch for those that are interested…

Edit: and the NM Classic version as well ;-)

Yes. The G2 was a first try and the algorithm is very old relative to the plugin. There are other issues with the G2 and feedback which are well know. For me, the experiment was enough to drive my interest to continue research.

There is the free plugin you can try which is better than the G2, a bit. The new plug in is much improved over that though. The new one has the ability to adjust the active parameters. You can control the "phaseness" as you prefer. The "space" control does this.

This is slightly more bearable with open cans, like the AKG K701 I use, absolutely necessary to hear the wife complains. I'm in serious love with these headphones, except that the headband is all the contrary of comfortable. Fortunately it can be somewhat fixed with some foam.

I see wood inside and trees outside, how I envy you!

Probably not. It appears that it is meant to be used by one listener lined up along the center line of two closely spaced stereo speakers. A condition that would not normally occur in a live PA venue.

A new G2 version of my headphones processor patch is posted here:

http://electro-music.com/forum/post-358486.html#358486

The most up to date G1 version is on my Micro Modular which is still in storage, so I don’t have immediate access to it, but this G2 version is tweaked to sound better than my previous G2 patch work. Wink
