I'm considering buying a Nord Lead 2 that's been fully patched so it's equal to the 2X. It's down to $799 when I'm sure you know that's way less that half the price, used for about 4 months and it's still in tip top shape. Good buy? Worth it? That's all I want to know, it will be my first real synth if so so this is a tough decision for me (not really having much money and all). Cheers !

What you might consider before buying is that a Nord Lead 2 can't be expanded or "patched", as you say. to equal a 2x. A 2x is a 2 that has more memory built in and an additional 4 voices on top of the 16 that the original 2 came with and 24-bit DACs which is up from 18bit in the 2. Nord Lead 2s usually can be had for under $650. I'd stick with the 2 but you might wait for a better deal or lurk during bidding during the last minutes of an auction. Make sure you get one with a memory card included for patch storage. You might be able to get a 2x rack version for around $800, the keyboard version is usually around $999 . BTW......feel free to start new topics in this forum! We need to get some threads going! Wink
I highly recommend a Nord Lead 2 or even an original Nord Lead for a first synth for anybody. It was my first Virtual Analog and I love it every time I use it. Read the manual when you get yours cover to cover and you'll understand the basics of programming it......great if you like to turn knobs!

I have struggled with the Nord Lead 2X midi implementation since purchasing the keyboard and unlike other manufacturers, Clavia chooses to transmit program changes on a second midi channel. They call this channel the "Global" channel which is misleading because it does not behave as a true Global channel, which is typically used when doing sysex dumps etc. It's important to note that the second channel is used only in "Performance" mode. When in "Normal" mode, program changes are transmitted on the same midi channel assigned. This may not seem like a big deal, but when using a sequencer, you either have to record using "All" or "Any" or use two distinct tracks, one assigned to the Nords midi channel, the other assigned to the Nords "Global" channel.
This presents a real problem when using sequencing programs like Steinbergs Cubase if you want to handle everything on one track. Simply put, you have no choice but to use two tracks if you want command of all the Nords controllers from the sequencer.
So just be aware, Nord transmits on two different channels when in "Performance Mode". This implementation just creates more work for the end user. Other manufacturers simply transmit ALL data on the midi channel assigned. Period.

Tony, I read a huge frustration in this remark and I believe you're right from your side and I still can't figure out why it works in my studio and not in yours...

Anyway, aeccoin wants to buy a second hand NordLead2, which can't never be the same as a NordLead2X, as Gothboy pointed out. And the offer isn't that cheap... Do I smell a rat...?

The NordLead2(X) is a very good synthesizer to start with concerning sound design. It has a very logical interface where most of the buttons and knobs have only one function and there are no 'drop down' menu's, which will direct you to hidden routes or all that blurry stuff. If one stays away from the BandPassFilter or HighPassFilter, the synth always produces a kind of sound, which works in the beginning always reassuring Smile

At the other hand, there are some rumors going on Clavia could be introducing a new, rather small and not to complicated synth next Music Messe in Frankfurt. So, look further and I should skip that offer...

Thanks Wout again for your help in the past. Your right about my frustration. It has more to do with my amazement that after 25yrs of midi, a manufacturer would come along and change the midi implementation. It's not just sequencing, but even in live performance, switching between performance patches cannot be triggered properly from an external source, (midi patchbay, sequencer, bank/program commands). Also as a performer, you have to scroll through all the programs to get to the one you want which takes up valuable time. But of course like most things, there are work arounds. The Nord is a great sounding machine and that's why I purchased it.
It would be nice if Clavia would make available an OS patch to correct this.
BTW, I have nothing against the Swedes, I drive two Volvos Smile

Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

That Povel Ramel 5 CD box ( material from 1942-1991 ) is a perfect friend for any Volvo out there! I´m not kidding! This is more authentic swedish than any VHS copy of Jag är nyfiken - gul.

Imagine sitting in a Volvo and not having songs like "Knackelibang på dörren" and "Var är tvålen?" playing on the stereo...

Impossible..! Shocked
