In this thread the subject came up as how to combine multiple PDF pages into a single document without using the Adobe tools.

As it happens GhostScript can do that (and more) for you. The web site pointed to has some more usefull tools you might want to look into, like a port redirector that has been of good use to me in the past.

I wrote a little helper aplication for GhostScript to assist in combining pages. My normal use is to make PostScript files first and then to combine those into a single PDF document. The help file that comes along reflects that use, but it doesn't really matter if the source material is PostScript or PDF (PDF being a PostScript derivative).

The ini file that comes along is the one that I last used, you might want to change those.

Stoker BTW is dutch for distiller [ One that makes alcoholic liquors by the process of distillation.].

gs -q -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=Output.pdf 1.pdf 2.pdf 3.pdf

I should definitely write a wrapper for that one.

Yes that and then a few more for paper sizes and dpi's. Too much for me to remember anyway :)

Thanks, Jan.

Doesn't gs require the input files to be postscript?

Then how to convert png images to PDF? I scaned everything to png. Then I read the pngs into OpenOffice. OpenOffice combines all of the images into one document writes out PDF with one click. That is the solution I used for this job. Thanks for the gs info and the program.

By printing them to a PS printer that redirects to a file giving a PS file as the result. Once set up its not too troublesome.

I had seen the creater to be open office in the pdf doc you posted. I'm not too fond of open office myself - well the older versions that is, but didn't look at it for a while.

But please be happy the way you like it Very Happy

-sPAPERSIZE=a4
-dDEVICEXRESOLUTION=300 -dDEVICEYRESOLUTION=300

(not that either of these will reliably affect anything -- papersize might, but I don't know if device resolution affects anything unless you specify device characteristics. I find that it is best to feed GS with files that have the right paper size and resolution before batch converting. I am probably overly cautious. Also document paper size in PDF is only nominally important: you can have varied paper sizes, including different rotations.)

regarding png: I direct you to http://png2pdf.sourceforge.net/ this kind of thing takes a lot of the work out of this kind of job. There are a lot of these kind of converters included in the std gs distro.
