Well, I sold off all my analog CV equipment with intent to set up a digital audio workstation controlled by my laptop. I have software sequencers and synths lined up, but I am still in the market for a MIDI keyboard and a controller or two. In addition, my laptop's soundcard is not exactly fit for the job of driving my amps, so I'm also looking for a USB or FireWire audio interface with a few 1/4" inputs and outputs.

So lately I've been trying to sort out an economical and expandable solution for all this. Here's what I know I want:

- a simple 2 octave keyboard with piano-like keys preferably
- a controller with lots of assingable knobs and faders, and a few triggers
- no unbearable latency
- output to drive my amp
- moderate expandability

I'd like to stay under $500. I know things like the X-Station may be able to handle all of the above but I'd rather buy dedicated units for the sake of modularity. I was looking at the M-Audio UC-33e for a MIDI controller. I'm sort of in the dark when it comes to the keyboard and the audio interface though.

Your suggestions are greatly appreciately!

If you want endless knobs and faders that can be adjusted from the DAW, then the Behringer BCR2000 and BCF2000 are hard to beat.

I know you asked for modularity but give this a look anyway. This has it all - an Firewire audio interface, MIDI controller and keyboard! You can expand the controllers later using Behringer BCR and BCF 2000 units if you want so you still can expand it in a modular sort of way. I own the BCR2000 and it quite COOL! Cool

Looks good to me.

You might want to check these guys out also. The two octave keyboards are OK BUT you will get bored with that real quick! I know space may be a limitation since you are using a Laptop rig but if you can afford the space and extra $$$$, go with a keyboard that covers more octaves as it will make playing more enjoyable!

Good luck!
