For digital audio design, I would think something more modular would be more suitable, like Reaktor, or Max/MSP (or Pd). The control front is entirely based on what your goals are after-- lots of patch tweaking, sequencing, paattern generation, do you like knobs or sliders?. Are you a keyboard player? will you be? or will you never be?

I prefer to build my own midi controllers, where required or more economical.

Reason is basically a virtual version of a late 80s/early 90s rackbased synthrig complete with effects and some sequencing. Reason also offers some basic recording features. It is a better version of that midi modules/rack effects/DAT and ADAT rig that came to be the standard setup for the working keyboardist. Reason is pretty cool.

I am a piano player but Im not really looking to play with this just to record things into reason. I basically am looking to create professional quality music with my computer. Sort of something like madtracker quality but with all the bells and whistles. I dont really know what I want or need. I dont know if I like knobs or sliders. I truly am new to the whole computer audio thing.

Reason does not record audio. you can record your performance as midi data that you can play with Reason's sounds.
