Subject description: about Q1

I've been checking out the CV In section of the Woggle Schematic. I'm a beginner so I have some questions. I understand how the pot(R9) interacts with the associated jack but I don't get what Q1 is doing. It looks like it is sending part of the voltage to ground and the other part to the vactrol. Can someone elaborate on that a little. What I need to understand is why it's there. The theory, etc....

As the base of Q1 becomes more positive, it conducts more current through it, through R20 to ground. The LEDs of both Vactrols are tied between +V and the collector of the transistor. The more current the transistor sucks through it, the brighter the internal LEDs of the Vactrols become. The brighter the LEDs, the less resistance the Vactrols' LDRs will have. So, more voltage at J3 and/or programmed with R9, the less resistance the LDRs have.

Cheers,
Scott
