Hi,
I am completely new to recording music using a computer, and i would like some help taking my first steps.
I have a Toshiba satellite laptop and a Korg X5D . I want to record my own backing tracks. I don't need fantastic quality at this stage i just want the most cost effective method of linking my synth and a laptop.
Preferably via a USB port.
Any information would be great.
I am absolutely clueless with this stuff so please don't get too technical.
Thanks Mark S. |

Hi Mark S.
welcome to electro-music.com
what you need is an audio/midi USB interface. something like this one. _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

The M-Audio product recommended looks to be just what i need i had a look on gak.co.uk and there was also a cheaper version.
The M-Audio fast track USB which is about half the price. Is this still a good package to use priced at £59.
Thanks Mark S. |

The one Carlo suggested comes bundled with a quite decent DAW. THis means you get both the interface and the software for this price. However, perhaps ProTools is not what you want _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

If I can get a copy of Sibelius would i be able to use it effectively with the cheaper alternative mentioned above.
Just a recap. I just want to get up and running ,recording guiter and keyboard on my computer (just for fun) as cost effective as possible.
Thanks Mark S. |

Sibelius is excellent, but isn´t a DAW.
You need something like Sonar, Cubase, ProTools etc. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

For just some audio recording and playback something like http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ would be good enough I'd say. _________________ Jan

Well, Audacity isn´t probably your first choice if you want to mess with multitracking, midi, song building and whatnot. Anyways, I guess what Mark S. really needs is Tracktion + some decent audio interface with midi.

Mark, I'm just thinking since you mention Sibelius, that maybe you want MIDI recording with conventional notation display and editing?
If so, that should be factored into the choice of software.

The X5D
Quote: | The X5D features a full 61-note keyboard along with modulation and pitch bend wheels and for those players who like to use alternate tunings, the X5D has a special scale function that gives you equal and pure temperament, as well as Workmeister III, Kirnberger III, Arabic, Indonesian and other exotic, nonstandard tuning systems. While the new X5D is lightweight, there's nothing lightweight about its performance. Its sound is simply stunning. and because it's extremely portable and rugged, you can take your X5D anywhere.
What's more, the X5D can be linked to a computer via the built-in PC interface on the rear panel (using the optional Ag-001/002 cable and driver software). This gives you maximum 64-note polyphony, integrated General MIDI (GM) and other GM-compatible programs, which you can play or edit directly from your computer.
Naturally, you can use the X5D's keyboard to input notes to your sequencer. And the selectable baud rate ensures that the X5D will be compatible with your system-no matter what computer you use. In short, the X5D is ideally suited to any multimedia and computer music application. |
