Our favorite Almighty Links Editor, Carlo, AKA Seraph, is back after an absence of several weeks. He and his wife went to The Ukrain to adapt a beautiful little boy.

Seraph in another topic wrote:
The reason of my absence is here: me and my wife just adopted IARIK a beautiful, Brasilian looking, Ukrainian boy. A very sweet and apparently bright young fellow (4 and a half years old)!
Isn't fantastic Question cheers afro

Yes, very fantastic! thumright

Carlo, we missed you. This place isn't the same when you are away. Congratulations to you and your wife, and to Iarik. Welcome back!

THX Almighty Howard
you embarrass me Embarassed
it has been a great adventure but having to deal with the cyrillic alphabet is a pain Shocked
just to give you an idea: the city where Iarik was born is Kharkov that in cyrillic is written: XAPKIB (btw that alphabet has 33 characters!).
You should see all those kids on the orphanage calling us: "mama, papa" an heartbreaking experience Exclamation

I am sorry to say that my son Iarik is still in the same Ukrainian orphanage where we found him because Italian bureaucracy does not allow me to bring him here sooner than 30 days after the judgement of the Ukrainian court (I do not know if I am making myself clear).
Bureaucracy can be very cruel.
How can you explain something like that to a 4 year old kid Question
We'll have to go back there next month to pick him up Sad

I do not mind at all but it's a very long story that started more than two years ago. We had to get a "parenting licence" and that made me think that if anyone wanting a child had to get scrutinized the way we were, humankind would be on the verge of extinction. Unfortunately for many poor countries orphans are an hot export item toward the rich western countries. It's a strange feeling to go to a country where you are considered rich (when, according to your country's standard of living, you are not).
Anyway, I do not know who found who but our paths crossed (apparently unexpectedly) and will be closely intertwined for as long as possible Very Happy

Well, I can appreciate the extensive scrutiny from the standpoint of protecting the child's safety and well-being. There is an ugly black-market of children out there.

You are right but my experience tells me that the main concern of bureaucrats is to feed bureaucracy itself, everything else is secondary (child's safety and well-being included).
Do you think I am way too cynic Question

No, not at all. You are right. There are usually a number of reasons for a particular circumstance. The protection of children, in this case, is the valid one. Beurocracy is generally invalid.

THX Sudden
it's a beautiful thing for sure but not necessarily unselfish, I would call it "positively selfish" because while we give Iarik the love he deserves, he's the son we could not have Exclamation

I would simply call it positive, as it is certainly as benneficial to him as it is to you, if not moreso. Look at it from his perspective.

Wow, Carlo - that is really great.

My manager and his wife adopted their child from Columbia - some similar issues and then the trip their to get her from the orphanage was an adventure in itself - crossing through some very dangerous areas.
