The magnophone up and running! Subject description: Synch with other gear.. |
|
|
I´ve been tinkering with some old toneheads, technics 1210:s and stuff for a while, finally got a few tunes with my noise/freeform duo ILK up on: www.myspace.com/ilkilk
It´s all livetakes, the first song only magnophone (with sax lines on it), the other songs got more gear running (feedback mixingconsoles, saxes etc)
Analoge? you bet!
Hope somebody out there enjoys it..
Btw. thanks everyone who´s contributing to these forums! I ALWAYS find something interesting to read about here..

that sounds like a quite interesting process... I'd like to hear more about it... I don't know much about tape heads especially record heads and I would like to eventually give building a really lofi fourtrack a shot... possibly with four seperate reals running on one motor? Seems like the easiest way to do it... Anyway, if you have any more info, I'd like to read a bit about it. _________________ analoguemind.zy8.org |

Very creative!
Would you post some pics of the magnophone?
What comes to mind is that one could spend lots of money $$ on fancy equipment to process/mangle sounds and you are processing sound with some old tape heads (etc) and getting interesting results. |

Hello!
Here are some pictures of the magnophone:
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t124/13goof/magnophone2.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t124/13goof/pickup.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t124/13goof/magnofondisk.jpg
Basically it´s a mod to a technics 1210 recordplayer.
I use old vinyls that I spray mount 2" videotape on. (couldn´t find any proper audiotape, tough it would be cool to experiment with pre-recorded material on a 2" tape sometime, imagine the sound of the pickup skidding all over the 48 tracks of a symphonic orchestra )
Presently it doesn´t have any traction towards the middle of the record (no tracks on tape..) But i´m planning to build a servo mechanism that moves the tonearm. (a 12" record should take about 3 minutes of stereo music)
What it does do right now is replay on three pickups at the same time, with a fourth handheld for recording (or one of the others for better tracking). I use an ordinary 2-channel dj-mixer with aux mic in for replay, and the phones out of a small alto 8-channel mixer for recording.
It´s a extremely hands on and intuitive process, you record where you put the pickup, to erase hold a small magnet over the recording. Put on another layer? record again over the first without erasing. Tape echo effect? put the toneheads after each other, record in front, erase behind.
Loops happen by themselves all over the place.. If you are a bit more organized make mellotron-like tracks close to eachother with the soundsource of choice and play them by moving the pickup from one to another. Hmm, gettin a bit carried away, this looks more like a commercial than a comment about a few pictures, (gotta stop before i claim I can cure cancer with some old casette tape pickups )
It´s a simple and fun machine to play around with anyway, it would be interesting to hear if someone has done the same before.

That magnophone is totally wicked!
it reminds me of Olli's "floppy disc echo"
Very nice device, works more like a sampler, than an echo. Recording head is recording the signal on the floppy, and the playback head is picking up the signal from the other side. Olli is holding the motor controller in his right hand to control the speed and whit the other hand reading the tracks.
Olli is also a member of Association of experimental electronics. _________________ Association of experimental electronics

Hi 13",
Hey, I like the vinyl you used for sticking the tape to! How did Midnight Oil's first disk find its way all the way to Sweden!!??
Cheers, Graham |

Very cool project.
One thing that would be interesting to add is variable speed of the turn table. More variabel than the one probably build in.
Hmmm.. i have a bunch of tapeheads, a stereo tapehead preamp, and a box full of stepper and DC motors laying around, aaargghhh another project on the list. _________________ Stay Cool

I love the tracks you made....

Yes, me as well have had more ideas than time to implement. I've been contemplating something like this before, but never got around to it.
I think Olli's version with the floppy disks would be my preferred method. More portable. Maybe one may even use the floppy read head as a pickup and circuitbend the track selector drive motor. And save multiple prerecorded floppys once they have workable soundsets or waveforms on them.
If you enlarge the center hole of a floppy disk interior these could easily be used on the Magnophone as well I presume.
I had some old Binson echos I sold too cheaply. They were just too heavy. Now I'm sorry I didn't just rip out the disks...
I had imagined I would need to use the erase heads as well, so I'm relieved to know a permanent magnet works.
Thanks for the sharing, very enjoyable. |

Synch to the outer world.. |
|
|
Thanks for all replies and positive comments!
Found a really cool old drum machine in a trashed yamaha electric organ..
Thaings are more fun when they play together...
>> synch for the magnophone! Optical!
Or, the other way around optical->electrial synch pulses derived from the strobedots on the technics platter..
Some tinkering but shouldn´t be too difficult to hijack old drummachines etc with homemede clock pulses from the magnophone..
I got myself some more stuff on the todo-list, apparently...

floppy disk echo |
|
|
.. i have an old echo machine that uses a magnetic disc.... can i swap the original echo disc with a floppy disk??
....is tape just tape??
I would only take all this trouble to allow saving multiple floppys . For just a change in sound there should be easier methods, but I suppose you could indeed swap for a floppy. Try it first, just cut out the metal center of the floppy and stick it on. Then maybe make some turntable like structure to replace the original disk for support and to adjust height. This could be less of a hassle than having to adjust the heads, I don't know. |

where can i find good tape record/playback circuttry-schematics??
it'l have a tiny build in mixer, and all i really need is the circuits that can take in the output from the playbackhead, convert it to "line out" and another to the record head, converting a "line in" to record head out ( and some bias stuff i assume..) Good news, no fancy stuff required.
Just something sensitive to amplify the signals from the playbackhead (s) e.g. a phono preamp (mic input on a small mixer works as well)
For recording I´ve just used headphones out from my small alto mixer (cranked up loud!)
You probably already got some gear that will work fine, it ain´t brainsurgery
And, as far as I´m concerned yes, tape is, tape..

ok. so i only need an amp to connect the tape heads to. But if i'm going to make my own tape echo, wouldn't i need to use a little more "audiophile" approach? i mean, in real tape recorders do you just use a simple amp to run the signal from a tape head through??
thanks!! |

I think amplification is mainly what´s going on after the signal has left the tapehead, but the exact cirquitry is more than i know of. But if you gut a taperecorder to get the tapehead you´ll probably just need to follow the leads to find the amp in question
If you, plan to build a "clean" sounding tape echo I suspect that the hardest part to get right is the mechanical stuff, (tape transport etc).
I´ve been told it´s important that the toneheads are placed at exactly the same angle over the tape (90*) in order not to loose some higher frequencies, also the tracking must be right.
But this maybe isn´t so important if just want to make a cool effect?
-Mi Dach!
-thank you! really glad you like it.
(btw, the spellcheckers suggestion for replacing "tapehead" would be "dopehead" -come on, who´s programming these thingies??)

I guess I'm responsible for the spell checker. I added tapehead to the list of acceptable words. Since Firefox has added inline spell checking, I haven't been using the forum's spell check, but when people call my attention to it I will add words.
Thanks for the suggestion... _________________ --Howard

Vcc is usually the term used for the positive supply voltage. The values allowed for Vcc will be in the devices spec sheet. I don't know what the other initials mean.
As for connecting a line lever signal to a mic input, you need to attenuate it quite a bit. You can use a transformer, or more simply a couple of resistors to divide the voltage. The only way is to experiment. _________________ --Howard
