I recently purchased the Juno D for my band. The method we use for MIDI implementation is most likely cumbersome and unorthodox, but it’s all we know. The problem I’m having is that the Juno D is insisting upon using the general MIDI based sounds that it receives from Cubase SX. The process we use for the composition of these songs is as follows. An entire song is written in the program Guitar Pro. The song is then exported into a MIDI file. That file is imported into Cubase SX. The drums are sent to a drum machine, and then keyboard parts are sent to either soft synths, an SH-201, or the Juno D.

Guitar Pro->(exported to) General MIDI File->(imported into) Cubase SX -> (Sent through midi to) Juno D

I. Guitar Pro
II. MIDI
III. Cubase
IV. Juno D

The Juno D normally plays more than one sound per song. What I want is to be able to select what sound the Juno D will play. I want to make it so that I can set this up once and not have to set it up every time the song is played (this would make live performance difficult). Is this possible?

Also, I’m having some trouble with the SH-201. Every time we start a song, the synth sound is reset to A1. Is it possible to solve this problem as well? Again, I’d like to set what sound is played for that song once, so that every time the song is played the correct sound will be selected.

I hope someone can help me because I know running a MIDI setup shouldn’t be as shoddy as I have it!

Obviously your Juno D and SH-101 are receiving program change commands. What you need to do is make sure your sequencer (SX) is sending out correct program change messages. Check the documentation on your synths for the correct messages to send. I have my entire rig of several hardware synths and softsynths set to play an entire piece as midi in Cubase SL. I'm always sending program change data. I set up a 1 bar midi clip that just has program change info and place it a couple of bars before my my synth is suppose to play. Each of my synths have different ways for changing banks and presets, so I've had to look through my manuals to know what messages to send.
