i am running mac os x 10.4.9 with DP 4.61
it is acting UP son!
The biggest concern i'd like some possible help with is that i am working on a rather long piece (17 minutes plus) with max (8.) stereo tracks going at once etc....now, i don't know if this is part of the problem but as of yesterday I CANNOT OPEN THESE FILES WITHOUT DP IMMEDIATLY CRASHING UPON LOADING plugins!!!!!! Now, the glimmer of hope is that when i launched up tiger in safe mood, although i couldn't hear anything, the digital performer file DID load.
Now, other projects can load. It seems just this one crashes. This has happened once before that a project would fail to open, but it wasn't of concern to me because it sucked. This is different. Lastly, in this project, i have saved many different copies of the DP 4 project. Earlier versions DO open...just not the most recent 3. And alot of work was in those recent files........Thanks guys.

Drop whatever you are holding!
Don´t touch anything..
Breathe...

A list of what I could come up with:

1. Updating the OS and/or QT is not recommended unless you know your DAW software will handle it.
2. It might not be this though.. but..
3. I don´t use or own DP so I simply doesn´t know much about it. Sorry.. Smile
4. Have you checked your disk for directory errors? Latest Diskwarrior is good.

Hmm..

Don´t start using Onyx for killing stuff just yet. check your disk with DW first.

Check your sound files and make sure that none of the sound files in the project is corrupted. Use quicktime or something like that to check it.
If you find it, delete it or replace it with a working copy. You might be able to fix it, although I've never had good luck with corrupted sound files.

In some cases the project itself gets corrupted. I've had this happen from time to time. It's why I make backups of important checkpoints.

But I'd lay odds it's either a soundfile or analysis file.

Good advice.
I would suggest he checks his HD before he does anything more though.

Hint - in OSX, startup a terminal.

Then in the terminal (it's Unix, remember) cd your way to your project, and find the soundfiles folder.

$ ls -al | more

and look for zero length files.

I don't know if you're any good with terminal mode, but the other way is to browse it with Finder and show full details.

If OSX gives you a box with gibberish when DP crashes, can you copy the contents of the box and post it here. Might give a clue. Details help.

thanks
yeah i noticed that all my corrupt soundfiles were only and exactly 4 KB.

but i can tell you right now i Put all the analysis, audio, undo, and fade folders onto my external hard drive. I then trashed all the files that were on my hard drive. ALL OF THEM! And guess what? Still crashed.

you said i could post the list of gibberish i get upon crashing? Seriously? Its very long, but it starts of with a mighty promising "unknown disk fragment" Surprised

ok, i'll dump into a seperate post

thanks again, and i will contact motu on monday Exclamation

One other tip.

You can create a new project, and load all of your sequences and songs, and import audio files. This might be a method of last resort to rescue a corrupted project.

Did you boot from another drive and checked the disk with Alsoft Diskwarrior?

yeah i noticed that all my corrupt soundfiles were only and exactly 4 KB.

but i can tell you right now i Put all the analysis, audio, undo, and fade folders onto my external hard drive.

Electro80's comment about checking your disk and doing a repair PRONTO is looking like a very pertinent comment right now.

It is, as you noted, crashing on a VST plugin load. You might wish to remove the VST plugins (forcibly) from their directory, you should know which plugin as it is one you are using in this project (assuming no other projects are crashing too)

haha, damn at least you guys know how to turn tragedy into comedy. Props on the usage of bold typeface. OK, so look, when you say doing a repair, are you just talking about opening up disk utilities? I've done that and clicked repair permissions, and you know what? It doesn't seem like much is getting fixed. Only few things (usually .framework i think) appear on the log. .....is this not all i should be doing? I will now get that diskwarrior thing.....but i would like to know what you mean by checking/repairing disk. Sorry, but I wish i knew more about hardcore computer nuts and bolts. Thanks yall

Diskwarrior rocks. You should spend the money on it. I did and it saved my ass once.

If your external drive is bootable (you can make it so), you boot from the external drive and then you can repair the primary. You can just use the Apple Disk Doctor, but it isn't as good as Disk Warrior. It might fix the problem though.

At least you have the audio and the project. It is probably repairable, from what it looks like here. What VST did you load into this project?

oh yeah, that's a Pluggo VST you got there? Make sure you also talk to Cycling74 then too. MOTU will send you to them anyway.

Which Pluggo have you got loaded? I have Pluggo here.

Try booting off a system DVD. Run the Disk Utility app and check the drive.
This app does only minor checks and repairs. It catches some really nasty stuff and some light shit. how well it actually repairs any and all of these well is something else. DiskWarrior is a must.

My 3 standard tools are

iDefrag
DiskWarrior
Datarescue

I use iDefrag not only for defragging.. which is not that often really.. but mainly for checking which ifles are ragged and where they actually are on the disk.
DiskWarrior.. a great tool

I use Datarescue for getting stuff off damaged drives and for undelete stuff and such.

If I were you, I wouldn´t use that partition where you have DP and / or your DP files until it has been checked.

Uh.. and.. ALWAYS have a drive around somewhere with a basic system installed + various serious tools for system maintenance and system repair.

Uh... strike that.. ALWAYS have a bunch of drives around just in case.. Shocked Laughing

i use vst wrapper and it seems to load every vst i have into the project. So, i doubt that removing the .vst documents from their location would fix anything, because as i said, most/all other projects open fine and they all load the same (meaning all) vsts plugins. If i am at least correct here, the loading of vsts on my part doesn't seem to be a manual thing. It just happens automatically in one fell sweep before loading the actual project................in terms of having the vst's active as virtual instrument or effect on an audio track, maybe thats it what it/you is/are referring to? But I KNOW i didn't have any effects on the mixing board, and there is no midi whatsoever on this particular project...anyway i'm going to try removing the vst's and loading....here we go again

well, i removed the vst folder from my library and same old stuff. Ok, i will invest in disk warrior and see what happens. I am so past the point of being mad I just don't give a fuck what happens. But i'm hoping for the best

A disk has a directory. Actually, a disk has several. These can become fucked up. Sometimes this is caused by minor crashes.. stuff so minor you don´t even actually notice.. some shit is caused by bad software/incompatabilities... other shit just happens.. digital erosion.. sunstorms.. you know.. Sometimes the disk might even be bad.. bad blocks.. the drive is failing.. A disk drive is like a 60s french car.
You can be sure of one thing.. it will happen and it always happens.
You need tools for checking and fixing.

Datarescue is cool for actually getting stuff off sick drives.

When you see weird crashes, always check the drive first.

Anyways.. http://www.alsoft.com/

You should have these too:

http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue_info.php

http://coriolis-systems.com/iDefrag.php

If you don´t quite know how to use such tools, get back to us and ask for more help. Very Happy

try starting a new project and importing what you can to it. Sorry to keep throwing different ideas but that's how it is with these things. Crying or Very sad

But do what elektro80 says first. Boot off the system CD/DVD and run disk doctor. At least you can see if there is a disk problem.

YOU GUYS ROCK!!!! okay, i will take some time and just try and figure this all out. I mean, i think its a mistake to get overly precious about one particular work, but this is goddamn 17 minute long non-looping (but with recurring them and variance) electronic piece of music and i'm just trying to get the produce on the truck, if u catch my drift.

The Disk Utility app in Applications/Utilities will not catch ALL errors. Idea

OK.. perhaps this track is not worth rescuing or whatever.. but still.. this is not only about the track and the related files.. but about the integrity of the whole drive.
Always check for the nasty stuff first.

i don't recall breaking any mirrors lately...but WHAT IS GOIN ON WITH MY LUCK!

ok, so i ran disk repair on my HD drive (booting off the os x DVD) like you guys said. I was hoping it would say it needed something to repair so i could at least feel something was working. It jovially told me that everything was ok. I checked my external hard drive just for shits and cackles and it was "fine" as well.

Ok, next step, I downloaded Disk Warrior. Site wasn't looking so robust, but i'll take both your words for it. And if you've seen my site I shouldn't talk (html skills lacking).
Point of the story is is that I donwloaded it from the site after payment and when the .zip document was unstuffing "Stuffit" crashed on me. Aint life grand? I'm sure this is not the end of the world, but like i always say, what is?
-i have a powerpc mac not the intel kind....does the .hqx "argument" (max msp talking here) to the zipped file mean its for intel computers? I doubt it but i am just flummoxed at the nature of my day thus far.

.hqx means binhexing.. which means that a file or whatever has been encoded into a "text" file. It should unstuff with the latest stufit expander. See if you find it at versiontracker.com

Trivia: it is smart to turn off that "will open trusted files" thing in Safari.

Please work from another partition ( with a bootable system ) or from another drive altogether.. ( yeah.. another drive.. I see you have a lacie there )

You MUST run DW from another drive anyway.. so .. Very Happy

BTW: It is time to say that stuffit deluxe is kinda dead. The full suite is flaky on DAWs. You can use other tols for compression. You will however still need Stuffit Expander.
