I think it costs less than $30 US to build using this graphic LCD for $9.95:

Compatible with these PIC's: 18F2550, 18F4550, 18F252, 18F452 and possibly 18F4620.

Ah! That looks damn cool! Yeah, I'd love to make such a thing for modular use.!.

The Doepfer kit looks interesting, but keep in mind that the Velleman VPS10 costs 158 euro (in addition to the actual Doepfer kit).

That's an excellent price.

Although a little more dollar, howabout a digital storage oscilloscope for your Nintendo Gameboy? Cool

Yeah, I've found that before, its very smart

i think the key to the lcd is the KS0108 integrated controller. you basically should compare the specs and pinout with the one that the guy used with whichever you wish to substitute it with.

here are a couple in from Pollin.de (Germany) that are *probably* compatible:

hey this would definatly look fantastic in a modular. Can´t belive it´s so simple. just the pic, crystal and display.
Would be cool to have a "nice" disply, like green on black... you know.
Ónce seen this schematic (never tried it) of an scope with a 10*10 led matrix. Just a 4017 and one of these level-meter-led-driver-chips.
could of course cascade each two for better resolution - but that means soldering 400 leds... would look very cool though.
