my friend has lent me a novation supernova, i have used it with my midi controller fine so i know it works. but when i try to set it up to sequence in logic, i get no sound.

i'm not used to hardware synths, so i know i'm missing something basic here, i have tried everything i can, i have set the novation to midi 1 and this is the same on instrument 1 on the sequencer. i have connected the supernova's midi in/out to my interface out/in and i have the supernova's main 1&2 output going into my interface and obviously i am outputing to my monitors.

my question is, how do i tell logic about the supernova? thanks

Is the problem in the synth not acting on the MIDI data or is it the sound that does not get routed through the computer ?

i dont think the sound gets to the computer, on the transport bar, it says no in / no out. so there is no midi data, when i hit a key in the matrix editor nothing happens, its like there is no communication at all

does the synth have an LED or something to show if it's receiving MIDI ? Might be something to look up in the manual.

I just found a remark in the manual suggesting that the part light should flash when MIDI comes in :

Quote:
The Part is Muted / No response at all - If the Part light flashes steadily, even with no MIDI input, the Part is Muted.

The Part is Muted / No response at all - Does the Part light flash when MIDI is sent? - Yes - The Assigned outputs may be different to the ones connected, check the setting of the Outputs menu for the offending Part.

Probably it's something in the logic setup then, I don't know that software though, so I hope someone else will step in.

The manual thing was no problem, I'm editing and warping some music in a wave editor, so I have "natural breaks" Very Happy

OK, so, play something from your master keyboard. do you see midi coming in to Logic?
if yes, create a midi track on the environment, open it on the arrange window, select the midi port to which your supernova is connected. does midi signal goes thru the synth?

if no (to the 1st question), check the physical input (on the environment) to make sure it is connected to the sequencer input.

let me know Very Happy

hi, im back again with another question. seraph you are right about creating a midi instrument in the environment window. the thing is the supernova is set to global on every instrument preset, so for it to work i have to change it to midi 1 every time. this is a real pain. i have set the midi instrument as all ports/ all channels. but the supernova will not accept that data in global mode, i have to keep changing it to midi 1. any ideas?

try creating a multi instrument in the environment

and select/activate only the midi channels you are going to use (leave the supernova as it is) and see if it works for you.

I tried that, but if the instrument preset is on global i still get nothing. in the supernova, if i cycle through the options for midi, i get channels 1 to16 omni and global. every intrument is set to global by default. it works when set to omni or if i select a midi channel and select the same channel in logic. so i have to either setup logic so it can talk to the supernova in global mode, or change teh supernova so that every instrument is set to omni.

i appreciate your help here,

larn

usually polyphonic synths have 2 operation modes: one of them is a multitimbral one called multi, performance, whatever.
There must be a way to set the supernova this way in order to play more than one instrument, each one of them independently from the other ones, on different midi channels.
