ColourControls Subject description: JPEG => MIDI |

I had this idea that you might be able to generate useful MIDI control messages by analyzing colours in a picture. So I wrote an application that did it, and set it up on SourceForge:
http://colourcontrols.sourceforge.net
The blurb:
Quote: | Scan images and generate real-time MIDI messages depending on the colours that are read by the the scanner. Examples of usage: doing arrangement scores by drawing lines with different colours, hear what a photo "sounds like". |
If any of you find this useful, or think if any kind of improvements that might make it useful, find bugs, hate it etc, I would love to hear about it.
Here's a screenshot for how you might be able make a kind of fuzzy arrangement score using this:
It's a Java app, and thus cross-platform, but I haven't figured out a good way to make executable icons on the Mac yet, so you'll have to go via the terminal. Furthermore, Mac users will have to install a Java MIDI SPI to make it work (do you have to do this on Linux as well?) - it's explained in the README file, along with a ton of features I plan to add in the future.

That looks exciting!
How about a compiled/runnable download? I'd really like to try it (as I'm sure others do!)...

Seems like a fun program, don't really have the time to explore it though (would want to make some G2 patches for it)

Improvement not necessarily, but I did something along these lines (but with a bit of a different take) some years ago. Also a sort of a picture explorer were the mouse position determines a note number and a velocity, the mouse wheel sends CC 1 messages and the three color components send CC 2, 3 and 4 messages. This was fun to use for a while, it would be more fun with a touch screen even. It's still on line. _________________ Jan

Sorry Antimon, I was rambling, I know nothing about Java - took a closer look and saw that it was indeed ready to run. So now it's runninng with the correct (depending on ones view) java version installed.
I'm sure it'll be fun when the MIDI note messages gets implemented - right here and now there is nothing to hear, but that's because I haven't got a suitable setup at hand, just this here laptop.

Cool! I figured that similar stuff ought to have been done before.
I actually have an idea about an option replacing the line with a box that samples colours inside itself. Also, you will be able to click somewhere, and the line or box will move to that position with a speed of choice - a bit like Blue Hell's cool app.
That is, given that I can defeat my laziness and irresponsible behavior.
