My tuppence: the usual advice is to handle the transistors with tweezers to avoid warming them up. But I found that having them exposed to the air meant the readings never settled, likely due to draughts. My solution was to hold the trannies to be tested in my hand, warming them up to bolld temperature, and to grip each one firmly between finger and thumb while testing. This of course means they are warm, but hopefully all to the same temperature, and protected from draughts. I found the readings settled reaosnably well - good enought for my purposes - after 30 secs or so. Any that didn't settle I'd discard for matching anyway.

It's worth remembering that this method is about differentials between two DUT, not absolute measurements, so, within reason, testing under the same conditions is what matters.
