RINGMOD WITH BOTH DC INPUTS Subject description: Yusynth 1496 balanced modulator |

Hi,
for sure this is no advertising, but I also went for a dual old-school ring modulator from the Yusynth series.
Based around LM1496, nothing fancy.
what intrigued me was the four inputs jack connectors !
yes ! four of it ?!
X AC, ok, seems normal, to put in my first (main) signal...
Y DC to gently modulate main signal with let's say a LFO for tremolo fx...
Y AC to process two audio sources (bell, klang...) ok.
and...Y DC ?
which means you can ring modulate one lfo with one adsr eg ? or with 1V/O keyboard output ?
difference between AD/DC is for sure one 1uF (which blocks any offset or DC signal, that's true ?) in the audio path...
who here around EM used to DC x DC ?
is it something like an unpredictable waveshaper/twister ? |

Well the idea behind having DC and AC coupled jacks (both for inputs and outputs) is that it's not a ring modulator (in the original sense : that is a ring of diodes) but a balanced modulator. Thus it may be used to generate klangourous sounds (the most frequent use) but also as a four quadrant multiplier and this makes it possible to multiply two steady or slow varying CVs that can be either positive or negative and the sign of the output will depend on the input signs. Such a four quandrant modulated CV may be used to drive various modules such as a thru zero VCO or a VC-panner.
For example, you make think of using this to modulate the output of an ADSR by a slow rate square LFO ranging from positive to negative, this gives at the output an ADSR envelope that toggles sign at the rhythm of the LFO.

well...one year later, i'd tried !
i've built two 1496 ringmod, but only only has both DC inputs, and I omit DC output (for both modules)...
So, my DC test went through 1uF cap, the one at AC output.
and it's a real experience !
On my scope it was about 15 or 20 volts pp !
I plugged output into an att/offsetter before feeding vco.
I'll try with attenuator on ringmod inputs...
but i didn't manage to get one positive eg then one negative (lfo feeds one DC input and comparator, divider and then trigs adsr eg)
My 1uF, at DC low frequencies, is acting like a slew ?
Maybe I could remove it from outputs, and set up, on another module/panel, a dual passive "DC removal" : input socket -> 1uF cap. -> output socket ?

Well it may sound like a slew (an integrator) but in fact it is a differentiator with quite a very low time constant. _________________ Yves |

Yes it is the very same and the PCB are readily available from bridechamber with my agreement. They also provide a MOTM font plate and I think they will provide front plates in the DOTCOM/YUSYNTH style as well (but I don't know when). _________________ Yves |

there's a picture of a build from a guy called AndyR1960 which shows a panel with a 'grain' control... which looks rather interesting... do you know more about it? was that part of a dual ring mod?

No this is not part of the yusynth module, as a matter of fact you can see two PCBs, one is a MFOS noise generator and the other a YUSYNTH Ring Mod, _________________ Yves |

Hi,
So I am going to try to build this modulator and after reading this topic I do still have a question about the AC-DC inputs.
I think I can quite understand the use of both AC and DC, but can I replace the 2 input jacks on each channel with only one input jack and a switch to bypass the cap?
I mean, can you use both inputs (AC-DC) on the same channel at the same time? What happens if you use the 4 inputs of the modulator at the same time?
And also...
I have an MC1496, can I use it instead of the LM1496? Again, by looking at the datasheets they seem the same thing to me...

No problem, this is going to work alright.

This would be a bad idea because of the low impedance of the outputs of the external modules that would interact, this would result in a drastic loss of signal.
And also...
