Sent this link to my son in hopes for the perfect Fathers Day gift.
He hasn't responded.

My inquiry to several modular owners/users as to going about assembling a 'portable' modular always provokes some variation of this response, "Why would you want something that small ??"

Can't help wonder if PLAN B built this as a one-shot masterpiece or still offer to do so. The Halliburton case looks so much more practical than Gator or SKB cases.

That synth is custom built for keyboard player of Nine Inch Nails, Alessandro Cortini. There's only one of them.

Oh, well... My son tells me he has seen NIN... I think he no longer worries about my sanity but whether it is hereditary !
Actually, Mr. G at PlanB says that they still can build into a case such as that but the case alone is about $1600 USD.
I'd better rethink this.

You have to consider the depth of the modules, unless of course the whole thing including the modules is being built custom (like the NIN thing). There seem to be very few standards or even easily obtainable specifications to how deep a particular module's PCB is or can be. Sometimes you just have to ask someone who owns one. It's not too often but every once and a while a "deeper" third party module comes out and it won't fit in a particular existing case.

One thing I noticed about the NIN unit you linked to is they don't list the depth of the case. Which brings up that I remember that their original Model 15 stock VCO is deeper than average though it does just barely fit in Doepfer's portable G6 case (for Eurorack format modules), which is probably the most popular portable case being sold. The main NIN case photo looks like it's an inch thich which surely isn't reality. The bottom photo seems to show the true thickness which certainly isn't much either. So it's interesting to note that indeed they did redesign the boards on at least their VCO for that case.

I guess they used this newer board layout

Compare to the initial design of the same module that was sold to the public. Mine look like this.

oh yeah, btw, fathers day in the US is the same as fathers day in the UK. It's the mothers days that are different.

Not that this has anything to do with the topic, just the title.

While we're on this topic of affordable portable cases...
Won't Plan B modules fit in the Doepfer A-100 suitcase ?

Yeah, Plan B modules fit in the Doepfer Suitcase. There may be some depth issues in the area over by the power supply, though. The ones I have fit fine on the top row.

If you want something that would make a good portable system the Cwejman rack might fulfil your requirements:

Reckon you could build that into a medium sized suitcase with ease if he ever releases it.

Will you need a keyboard for the EAR kit? Since I don't see a MIDI/CV converter, a voltage control keyboard would be required. That will add to the price.

i think that system is designed for live nine inch nails performances; an external master click track would be driving the 8x4 milton sequencer.

Thanks, 'bearbloc" and I agree about that stunning system the EAR Group put together.
My interest in a portable modular was re-invigorated by an interview with Steve Roach in Electronic Musician (Dec. 2005) where he spoke of breaking away from the familiar keyboard control.
Here is a link to the interview:
http://emusician.com/em_spotlight/steve_roach/

His description of ever-evolving soundscapes made without midi keyboard interface just seemed to click with me.
My thoughts are that if I could not create something wonderful with a Doepfer suitacase full of multi-function modules... something is seriously wrong !

Maybe Mr Roach would be interested in a Clavia G2?!

Yes, he should watch Howard play the G2X with nothing more than a sustain pedal, a microphone for the vocoder, and headphones !
Man, talk about portable.....
